Depends on which airport you fly in to but most things for the tourist are on the side Ataturk airport is on.

Visit the Hagia Sofia in Sultanahmet

in the same area (within 1 mins walk) is:

    Blue Mosque,
Topkapi palace - sit out in the grass with packed lunch or go to the cafe inside.
    Yerebatan Cistern

Follow tram tracks near there away - uphill a little (cant remember the name of the street) there is a nice coffee house and water pipe place - maybe 10 mins walk in what used to be an Islamic school

Get a ferry to the other side of Istanbul - quick and cheap ferry port is along the river side. Nice and relaxing :) or do a river tour if you have time.

Didn't really like the Grand Bazaar myself but definitely go somewhere for some turkish coffee and a smoke of the water pipe, not too hard to find in the tourist area but I preferred this one about 10 mins walk from the Hagia Sofia, follow the tram tracks up the slope and it's in an old Islamic School - mostly locals go there (it's on the right but and near some sort of a graveyard but I can't remember the name)

Bars + shops - similar to graften street - Taksim area.
