    I'll never understand this.

Banks...post offices and other businesses that have more than one employee....

For most people, the only time they can get to these places is on their lunch break....only to find that they can't pay that bill, or lodge that money, "cause they're "closed for lunch".

Like off licences that stop serving at 10 bells....this is just another example of stupid things that I don't understand in this country.

It is really annoying when banks and supermarkets have less staff due to their staff taking a lunch break at peak time. They should employ lunchtime cover.

Also, why do Marks & Spencer only open at 9am? They are famous for wonderful sandwiches and lunch items but are not available for those of us who would like to purchase them on our way to the office.

Not all of them. There's an AIB down the road from me that's closed right now.

And a post office, come to think of it.

The only positive for me is that my local Credit Union and local Post Office remain open during lunch , and on Saturdays too.

But the rest really pi$$ me off too.

Most of the post offices around me close for lunch.

How are people working the same hours as them use their services???

Looks like you're just gonna have to open your own bank/post office!

While Germany (and Bavaria in particular) is generally very strict when it comes to opening times etc, (almost everything is closed on sundays for example).

What they do have is post on a saturday which is very handy.

My local bank (BOI) closes between 12.30 and 1.30 while the local post office closes between 1.00 - 2.15. Absolutely impossible to try and get bills paid etc on your lunch break.

Ever heard of online banking, direct debits etc.?

I haven't been in a bank in years.

Ever tried to buy a stamp online? ;)

I like the ' insert cash option' which requires no envelopes , just straight cash into machine but not everybodys going to feel comfortable putting a wad of cash into a machine at any time .

Apart from direct debt payments it's handy to use the ATM outside where I can choose the 'pay bills ' option which thankfully requires no bank opening time hrs .

Are Marks really famous for wonderful sandwiches and lunch items? I mean, yeah, they're grand and all, but I wouldn't go out of my way for pre-made stuff (and probably pre-made a fairly long time ago).

Because maybe one person running a bank on their own is not a fantastic idea?

If you've got a JCB, it doesn't matter whether a bank's open or not.

    Banks open at lunchtime.
So do Post Offices, come to think of it.

In Ireland only larger post offices open at lunchtime. "Sub" post offices close for lunch.

The decision regarding which towns/areas qualified to have one of these larger post offices seems to have been made sometime in the late 1920's with the result that today there are some very large towns that only have one of these half@rsed excuses for a post office while other much smaller places have one proper one and maybe a couple of sub branches too.

Lunchtime/"Late"/Saturday opening for (some) banks is actually a fairly recent innovation. Its not that long since banks only opened on weekdays, closed for lunch and shutdown completely at 3pm except for one evening per week where they stayed open until the shockingly disrespectful late hour of 5pm

Im not making this up but a dew years ago macari chipper in tallaght village had a sign on the door 'closed for lunch'!! Couldn't believe it! Went for the healthier option anyway in spar up the road!

Would you use the JCB for making lodgements or just for withdrawls :D

This happened to me the other day. I never use the post office but had a letter to send so off I went, I get there at half 1 and I see that it's closed for lunch  Wait around and a queue starts to form and they don't open up until 2.05  and there was 3 people working there.

Libraries are worse - my local library opens somethin like 10-4 four days a week, and 1-8 another day, and is closed at weekends. So if you work 9-5 you have about a two-hour window in your week to get to the library. given that it's a leisure activity, you think they'd try to open when people aren't working.

It is a bad situation, but I think it's mainly due to cutbacks (not sure if this was the case pre-recession, though). My local library has great opening hours, though: open Saturday AND twice (or three times) late during the week.

    Marino post office certainly doesn't.

Where I work we don't close for lunch, sometimes we get customers who are surprised that we stay open, one called my boss a "slave driver" for staying open over lunch... I just told her we stagger our breaks.
