Mother in law lives in an old cottage which has a tiny water tank in the attic.I was going to put a larger tank in but the access only allows me to put another small tank up there.I was going to just connect it to the original with a 3/4 pipe but I think that the water in the second tank would stagnate.Do I try to put the feed into one tank and the outlet in the other or is a connecting pipe good enough?

Its 6 of one and half a dozen of the other really. Some people just keep the one ballvalve in the original tank and normally an inch pipe in between but 3/4 should be ok also. I normally fit a ballvalve in each tank and keep on ballvalve lower than the other to try and stop the water becoming stagnate.

This is one way to do it.

Another is to join the tank with multiple pipes say 3 1" tank connectors top middle and bottom have the ball valve in the primary tank and take the feeds from the second tank that way the water wont stagnate.

Put a lid on the tanks while you are up there.

Some people are not aware of coffin tanks have you checked these for size.
