If you'd like to keep that weight off for good I would consider dropping Weight Watchers, and instead learn about nutrition.

Learning about nutrition is obviously something that's very important, good call!

But I'd advise to stick with what is obviously working, until it stops working, then change the plan to something more natural (grows from the ground, or walks the ground, then eat it).

Great work and all the best!

I hear you, i am trying to use the points sensibly at the moment , i do have a basic understanding of nutrition but i admit i do find myself still having that bag of crisps and piece of chocolate each day. In saying that I am going to start here and see how it goes for at least 2/3 months and then maybe when i get into a good eating pattern drop the ww.

i joined for about the 10th time 2 weeks ago and have lost 7 and a half pounds! i have 8 stone plus to loose to see my goal! but i think i ll stick wit it this time!!:)

Hope it works out for ya,just keep going even when ya wanna dive into a takeaway!!

I dropped from 19st 13lb to 15st 2lb over the last year.I just tried my best to eat right and do some exercise,do not overdo the exercise at the start or ya might break down with a injury.
I did the food part on my own with my wife's help, reading here and gaining knowlegde online with research into proper foods will all help.Do try lose the WW at some point in the future.

    Good luck once more!

i do find myself still having that bag of crisps and piece of chocolate each day.

Try the 100 calorie Tayto ones,1 bag here n there will not kill ya.My wife loves crisps and has these 1/2 weekly as a treat. They do actually taste pretty good too

I am going to stick to the pro points plan rigidly and attend all of my classes , all of the time!

I'd advise against this rigid, all-or-nothing type of thinking. What can happen if you're thinking this way is that you can miss a single meal or class and you then feel as if you've blown it and failed. Many people give up at this point when they were in fact doing fine.

Always remember that it's what you do (exercise and diet) the majority of the time, not all the time. One single meal or missed exercise class won't make your fat so just get back on track immediately and keep going.

Every time you take 1 step backwards (e.g. cheat meal, missed class), take 5 steps forwards (5 days of healthy eating, going to all your classes).

Keep doing this and you'll lose lots of weight very quickly.

    Best of luck!

    Good for you.

    How tall are you?

11st4 for a gent(?) seems light to me.

I would also say that an 8st overall weight loss is a lot.

Are you partaking of any sport/gym work in conjunction with the classes?

I'd really like to see you building muscle as well as losing the weight.

Not having a go at you just offering some advice.

    I'm female and 5-8.
I do a team sport and have training 1-2times a week for about an hour each time, it's all cardio work done.
I don't go to the gym - as i simply hate the place- but have 2 circuit classes a week. I'm hoping the 2 circuit classes (lots of core work) and the kettlebells will look after the toning/muscles.
Don't worry , all advice is welcome!

First weigh in - 6.5lbs I'm now 17 - 4. Delighted, leader told me not to expect those kind of figures every week though as apparently you always lose a bit more the first couple of weeks.

    6.5lb is alot,good work though...well done!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,722 ✭✭✭nice_guy80

    well done!
think of the kettlebells as working your muscles - 'toning' will come from dropping body fat. a good kettlebell class can be better than going to the 'gym'

no harm with doing an extra kettleball class and dropping a cardio class the odd week. just to mix it up!

wow blue shark that is amazing, well done. i am female & 5'8" as well.
i am 13 stone 5lbs :( trying to get back to around 11 stone. but i tried
weightwatchers and literally was starving all day, feeling faint etc. people
say you shouldn't be hungry on weightwatchers so i'm not sure what i was doing wrong? how do you find it, especially when you are working out
etc? i started power walking 4 times a wk for 40 mins to an hour as well as normal walking my dog etc and with the extra exercise i was nearly collapsing, getting shakes etc so running into the kitchen stuffing food into my gob to get my blood sugar back up! other friends have done great on ww so not sure what i was doing wrong? u are doing great so would really appreciate some advice!

I'd say stop the WeightWatchers and just read the Nutrition and Diet stickies - you want to be eating all non-processed foods if possible.

Eat as much veg as you like but not too much fruit as it's full of sugar (I limit fruit to two portions a day).

Eat lean cuts of meat and fish. Nothing breaded as it's not really meat/fish (it's crap).

Special K and other cereals aren't good either as they're also full of sugar/salt. If you like porrige, have that instead. Eggs are another alternative - boiled, poached, scrambled, omelletes, etc.

Don't be afraid of fats - just make sure they're the good kinds - nuts, seeds, extra-virgin olive oil, etc.

That's it in a nutshell but read here for further information.

Weights are the way to go for weight loss. A lot of women worry about getting too muscular - don't. I've been training for 11 months and still haven't added significant muscle. It's twice as hard for women to put on muscle.

I haven't tried kettlebells but I've heard nothing but good things about them and there's classes all over the place. There should be one near you.

Sorry to hijack the thread. If I wanted to eat an oat based breakfast but am really bad at timekeeping in the morning (working hard on it) could I make oat bars or flap jacks to eat en route? I know honey isnt great but would they be better than cereal bars or granola bars? Dont have a microwve to make quick porridge

They'd be much [/B better than the bars that you buy. I eat my porrige uncooked but noone else in my family can do that. They all cook theirs.

Slighlty off topic too but couple of food items i have questions over and need opinions.....

    1--- Granola Bars
    2----Kelkin granola cereal

Are these good or bad?love the cereal and would have a 60-80 gram portion with a low fat organic yoghurt on it

For the last nearly 2 weeks i have found it ok, it took a couple of days to get into the swing of the points system , but once i did it was fine. I'll give you an example of a days food

    Breakfast 7am-8am
All bran , 1/2 fat milk, glass oj
    or
    yoghurt , banana
    or
scrambled eggs and 1 slice brown bread toast

    snack 11ish
    apple, banana

    lunch 1
    brown bread sandwich/wrap
with ham, cheese (low fat) , peppers , spring onions , chutney

    snack 3
    velvet crunch
    or
    curley wurley

    dinner 5
    fajitas
    or
    chicken stir-fry
    or
    chicken curry
    or
    meatballs with salsa

    usually exercising classes around 7/8

might have some fruit after this or else a couple of jaffa cakes.

I find that after my dinner i can usually get through the exercise fairly ok.
    Hope that helps

    You're doing great!

I joined Weight watchers myself just before easter and to date have lost 25 pounds. I tried myself to lose weight at home with varying degrees of success but I really needed the discipline of being weighed in.

Some people on these forums seem to think WW is all about eating processed foods, ready made Weightwatchers meals and snacking on crap, but to be honest it needn't be. I have NEVER had a WW meal, and much prefer to make my own and I'm sure after a while you'll find your taste buds will change and you won't need the curly wurly or the velvet crunch anymore.

Like you I'm using WW as a kind of spring board to a healthier lifestyle and WW is working for me as a monitor - I have seen great improvements in my health so far - on meds for high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes - and these meds have been greatly reduced since starting as my health has improved. I was 15st 11lbs, now 14 stone.

    Best of luck with it!

I love scrambled eggs but i always ruin the pot and it takes like 10 minutes and 2 kettles of boiling water to clean!

    Whats the secret?

    buy better saucepans :)

when i scramble eggs, I just put some hot water in the pan before I eat.. and when I'm finished I give the pan a bit of a scrub and it's clean

    Serious?!

I just use a big thick pyrex measuring jug, lob in 3 full eggs, whisk, add salt and pepper, whisk again and then throw them into the microwave.

Times will vary on your machine, mine takes 2 minute 40 seconds and they're perfect!! Comes out as a big lump of egg and a quick whack of a fork scrambles them up.

    Haha yeah!

I've been told to stop it every 30 seconds to mix, that doesnt work either, i'll give em another shot in the morning, i might have them in too long

Yeah... I used to do that stop and mix thing and got sick of it cos I didn't notice it effecting the eventual outcome anyway.

You probably have them on too long!!

Weigh in today down 4.5lbs , so that makes me 16st 11.5lbs. Tough going the last few days , found it difficult enough to stay within the points but thrilled with the progress so far. Also i have to say i am loving the kettlebells classes after only a few weeks i swear my biceps are stronger looking and feeling!

OP, well done on your weight loss - you're doing great.

To answer the question about scrambled eggs, I do it the american way - I spray a pan with spray oil (you need a really, really good non stick pan, I have a small Jamie Oliver Tefal one and it's great) or a little oil or butter, heat it gently, throw in your eggs, and use a silicone spatula to mix them up. Keep scraping them off the bottom of the pan as they firm up, they take about a minute and a half to cook! Longer if you've more eggs, obviously, but still really quick. Scoop them out onto your plate and chuck the pan in the sink - if it's a good non stick pan the eggs will wash off no problem.

I have to admit to never being able to stick to ''diets'' so last April I got a gastric band. I've lost five and a half stone so far, it's been great. I've actually started jogging!! Amazing, as six months ago I could barely walk!

    Keep it up OP xxxx

............15st 12lbs so that's a lb short of 2stone since i joined ww, and a lb short of 50 pounds lost since i began the overhaul! A lot done but a lot more to do! I've been training hard and trying to eat as well as I can , I know my food can improve, this week should be interesting as due to a couple of niggley injuries I've been advised to cut back almost all exercise. Kind of scares me but I know my body could probably do with the break. I'm just hoping the scales won't smack me in the face this week!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,722 ✭✭✭nice_guy80

who advised you to do that?
    just change your exercise.

try non impact - swimming, cycling and rowing machines in gym, get out on a bike!

Well done on the weight loss. Keep it going!!!

    Great work keep it up!

I'm in the same boat as you - have/had a lot to lose.

I've exercising very regularly (swim every morning for 40 minutes, walk every afternoon for 30 minutes, alternate days of weights for different muscle sets every evening) - weekends I take as I please but usually have a minimum of a hillwalk of an hour.

Diet wise, while I use Weightwatchers online as a barometer on quantity, I agree with most people on here that nutrition wise it's not a great measurement, so while I limit myself to the points it recommends, I do so by staying almost completely clear of processed carbs and taking a lot of fresh vegetables, moderate fruit and focus on fish/chicken as the main protien. I still eat a bit of this and that of crappy items, but only a couple of times a week, and tasters rather than meals.

I've gone from 20St 10lbs to 17St 3lbs since June 13th and am really enjoying it. Keep it up - you're doing great and you're not alone! Was delighted to see your log - motivating stuff!

Weightwatchers isn't very healthy and that's it really. It is better than burgers and chips, takeaways, readymeals etc (kinda because you can still eat as much as you want of these as long as you stay within your points)

It's also very variable, with the leaders some are idiots, and all demonise fats, in short in the long run it's not healthy.

Most people that know alot about nutrition do think weightwatchers is bad because they know alot about nutrition. I really can't say I know much about nutrition, I have learned a bit and realise there's still a sh*t load more to learn but I know know that fat is healthy and if I want to stay healthy I need to eat fat(real fat not chemicals with veg oil)

I've never used WW but I think it's great if it helps anyone get this sort of kickstart with regard to weight loss and portion control.

Yes, it's not for everyone and as Orla K says the class leaders can vary (this is obvious from the posts I've read on boards) but obviously the OP was lucky with their class leader and their dedication. As I said, it's not for everyone, but it does have a widely proven success rate. I'd say there's very few people who don't know someone who has used WW and lost weight through it. However, I think it's a building block rather than a solution.

Well done to the OP for putting in so much effort and hard work, fair play, you're a great example.
