Still have it here with no sports package.

I thought this became part of the sports package when Sky Sports News HD started.

This was announced about 6 months ago. SSN were running it during ad breaks, but I thought it came into effect before now.

Yes but it does show quite a bit of recorded highlights e.g. Cricket highlights are shown before the close of play. This station was removed from UK freeview IIRC about this time last summer but can be received here in NI via news and events package.

According to a post on the satellite section it will return on September 1st. A very peculiar situation.

Sweet jesus, please please tell me this is just some kind of sick joke!! Does it still work on UPC or is it gone on every platform?

The changes affect only some Sky subscribers.

As you will have seen from the letter we recently sent you, we are simplifying our basic channel packs from 1 st September 2011.

This means Sky Sports News will sit with our new Entertainment Extra pack, which replaces the News and Events pack. The vast majority of our customers will automatically migrate to this pack (at no extra cost), meaning that they will receive all basic subscription channels on Sky, including Sky Sports News. For more information on the new packs, see our Enjoy More page.

Any customer currently taking the News and Events pack will automatically be migrated to Entertainment Extra from 1 st September. Those customers who currently take all six basic channel packs (News and Events, Kids, Music, or Knowledge Variety and Lifestyle and Culture) will also continue to receive Sky Sports News, as will any customer who subscribes to Sky Sports 1 or Sky Sports 2. And any of these customers with an HD subscription will also enjoy on-going access to Sky Sports News HD.

However, until then, unless you subscribe to News and Events, you may lose access to the channel between the 1 st August and the 1 st September. To continue to enjoy the channel during that month, you can upgrade to that channel pack for just £1 per month.

As a reminder, you can find out which of the two new packs you will be moving to by checking your notification letter or email. This will confirm whether or not you’ll have access to the channel in September based on your current subscription.

Got a mate that doesn't subscribe to Sky Sports but likes Sky Sports News. Will SSN be affected be the change to the packages? He only has the variety & news packages.

SSN is part of News & Events so he won't lose out on it come September-you don't need Sky Sports to get SSN.
Looks like he'll get Style & Culture added to his package for free though.

From 1st September 2011 he'll be upgraded to Entertainment Extra. So not only will he receive Style and Culture, but he'll also receive the other packs (Music/Kids/Docs) as well as keep the packs he's currently receiving (Variety and News&Events). So basically he'll have all 6 packs.
And his price will remain at €25pm until 31 August 2013 (because of the price freeze), until 1 September 2013 when it'll increase to €33pm.

It has been moved back to its original home (News and Events pack) in order to have the channel alligned with its proper pack in advance of the channel package changes, as from a month from today (1st September 2011) the packs will change into Entertainment and Entertainment Extra packs.
So from now to 31st August anyone with News and Events pack (or Sky Sports) will continue to receive the channel. And from 1st September onwards anyone who has Entertainment Extra (or Sky Sports) will receive the channel.

I have basic plus cartoons at the moment and up until today I had Sky Sports News, I don't anymore which is a shame and a bit weird. Hopefully though, because I have cartoons, and thats in the "extra" package, I will get it back and a load more. Good old cartoons look like they have done me a massive favour!

Moved to Satellite, renamed, and merged with similar thread. You'd think Sky would have learnt from the confusion they caused with the Freeview move (when there was mass hysteria from basic tier customers on all other platforms thinking they would lose Sky Sports News). This is particular to Sky Digital this time so TBH it belongs in Satellite.

While Sky Sports News may a lot of the time seem like a running promotion for Sky Sports, its trumph card is Gilette Soccer Saturday which is (for a show about football which doesn't actually SHOW any football!!!) hugely popular, thanks mainly to Jeff Stelling's brillant presentation (he can make anything, how mundane, sound dramatic), but also due to the fact that 3pm Saturday football in England cannot be shown on UK television at all (sole exception for the FA Cup Final) and coverage in the Republic of Ireland is restricted to just one Premier League 3pm game each week, for reasons known only to the FA (contrast to many other countries where multiple games are shown).

Some folk see it as a cheap way to watch highlights the next day-I know one guy who won't pay to watch live games as MOTD and SSN will show the "important bits free"

SSN is also available to anyone that has Sky Sports but doesn't have News & Events pack after lots of complaints led to Sky bundling it with the Sports pack.

Yes from 1st September 2011 you will receive all 6 packs, rebranded as "Entertainment Extra". Which therefore means you will receive Sky Sports News.
And if you currently have Variety and Kids, then that means you are currently paying €25pm.
So from 1st September 2011 you will receive Entertainment Extra (all 6 packs) for €25pm, because your price is frozen until 31st August 2013. Then from 1st September 2013 it will increase to €33pm. :D
