'07 BMW E90 Door lock problem

    Hey guys,

Not an hour ago I parked the car outside the house and locked the doors. When I locked them, they seemed to go into a bit of a spasm, flicking on and off like mad. So I checked whether they were locked or not.

To cut a long story short, I seem to have fallen victim to a well-known issue with the E90 (discussed here) whereby the locks will shut with the remote, but they won't open again. So now I can only open the driver's door with the mechanical key, and none of the other doors can be unlocked - even from the inside.

The solution may be in changing fuse 57 and disconnecting the battery for a while which is something I may attempt. But I've two questions:

    1. What would a garage look to charge for fixing this (if anyone has experienced it before)?

    2. Seeing as this is a known issue, should something have been done about it when the car received a major service a few months back, seeing as there is a SIB (a service bulletin? SIB #51 19 07) for this?

If something should have been done, I'd rather hot-foot it back to the garage that did the service, although they could of course claim it's something else and charge me anyway... :(

Update: the DIY fix took a bit of a blow there - as I understand it, some spare fuses should have been included with the fusebox diagram, but I just checked it and there are none. Also, the fusebox seems to be in a wickedly awkward position to reach (considering I can't get the passenger door open).

Where would I get spare fuses to fit, and how easy is it to get them in and out?

im a bmw mechanic and there a fairly common problem to fix but it could be more complex problem related to the upper s.a.m unit in which case it requires the bmw gt1 disgnostics feel free to pm me ur questions always on hand to help out

An update on this for anyone else who encounters a similar problem:

I went to an independent BMW garage because I reckoned changing the fuse was just too fiddly for me, and I've no tools right now. It was a real one man and his dog type operation, and it turned out they had no 20 amp fuses. So I went to a Citroen garage nearby where they gave me (for free) two used 20 amp fuses of different sizes (as I didn't know which it should be).

Back to the 'BMW' guys and one of them just swapped out the burnt fuse for the new 20 amp one. Tried the doors again and got nothing. Asked the guy how much I owed him (it only took him 5 minutes) and he said it was free. Decent of him.

Then I put the key in the ignition again - noticing that the steering lock had been engaged - and drove off. A minute later, at a red light, I got a notion to try the central locking button again, and it worked!

So the damned thing is fixed again, for nothing bar a bit of Googling and an hour driving around and waiting.

I think I'll be selling the car now - don't think it's needed any more, and this incident reminded me of how much it will cost to fix things now that it's out of warranty.

i think this forum is making people paranoid about bmw faults, there are probably 90 % of bmw owners not on boards who have no problems, it is only car enthuasists who post here and if anything goes wrong we all hear about it so dont condemn your car on 1 little scare

    .

Doesn't sound like anything is actually fixed. A fuse shouldn't just blow, so if the fuse was blown there's a fault there some where. Based on your description possibly an intermittent fault.

Keep a note of which fuse was replaced, this might be valuable information for an auto electrician trying to find the fault.
