Big 4 Qualified - Working in Oz

    Hi all,

I have recently completed my training contract in a Big 4 firm. I am being kept on for the foreseeable future, but it is a job I really hate (work in audit in Dublin).

At 26, the option for a one year travel visa to Oz is really appealing to me. I am hoping to go to Sydney before Christmas with the aim to work for 6 months and then travel/work casually for the remaining 6.

I am very interested to read about the experiences of any qualified accountants in my situation who are currently working in Oz or who have worked there recently.

    - What is the working culture like? Similar to Dublin?
    - For those with big 4 experience, did you seek a transfer to another office? If so, what is the busy season like?
    - The availability of jobs?
    - What is the general outlook for newly qualified accountants in the big cities in Oz at the moment?

    Thanks!

    Hi Fullof,

Im thinking of a similar move myself after 1 year post qualification experience.

Has anyone managed to get sponsored into the country?

While I didn't work in Australia myself I know a lot of people from my department in Big 4 have gone to Sydney and everyones got jobs. It might take a few weeks to get a job but they have all been able to get jobs. Some have gone back into Big 4 firms in order to get sponsorship (easiest way) but most others are working in industry.

From reports Sydney is a very expensive city to live in and get set up in (deposit and first months rent - a months living expenses while you look for a job etc etc) but wages would be higher too.

If you are going around Christmas time just be aware that that is their summer time so it might be harder to find a job as alot of people will be on holidays and accomodation around Syndey is pretty booked up around then and especially New Years.
