How to repair / improve this

I've had a leak in the bathroom, and want to improve the look of the panels behind the loo. They appear to be mdf style, covered in wood strips.

I don't have a whole lot of experience in DIY but dont fancy spending too much money to resolve this. Could I strip these down & re-varnish, or just paint them over? I'm trying to get a good finish as the bathroom is quite smart.
    Thanks, The Ex.

I dont think you will get a good varnish finish. If its MDF its most likely soaked with water and the front sealed anyway. The only way i can see of solving this is to paint over it.

If your looking for a wood finish - perhaps paint and grain.

But it all depends on the level of soakage.

Thanks Joey, I think I'll go with the paint.
