When can we have our country back?

    TDs commit fraud with impunity
    Bankers do likewise
    Scumbags walk the streets
Low-lifes milk the system while decent people get shafted
    A church condones raping kids

Can decent people reclaim the country, or should we be the ones to leave and set up a decent country somewhere else?

I'm almost sorry that an ancestor of mine didn't steal some spuds, coz Australia & New Zealand seem to be a lot better than this cesspit excuse for a country.

And yes, some of this is prompted by the straw that broke the camel's back of some should've-been-drowned-at-birth toerag chucking a brick through my windscreen.......no chance they'll ever see punishment, while the rest of us get caught on camera and fined €80 if we even drift a few km over the limit with absolutely no intent.

I'm starting to hope that the Mayans are right so that we can start fresh after a welcome armageddon next year.

Hopefully not everyone from Limerick. And I don't care which set survive and which set die, as long as I don't have to share space with the scum of the earth anymore.

What does that rubbish have to een remotely do with the topic?

It's a valid question - with the state having less cash and therefore Gardai having even less resources to investigate crimes, it's only going to get worse.

We need someone to stand up and implement zero tolerance across the board, and since we can't afford to jail them, we need a solution.

Otherwise life will be hell for decent people in no time.

Liam is a realist. He only gets defensive about UNFAIR or OTT slurs.

If someone says "Limerick has its share of scum", then I will always agree.

If someone pretends that it's full of scum, then I'll challenge their false claim.

Irrelevant, because there are still people out there who believe this is an OK thing to do and, worse still, correctly believe that no-one will take them to account.

From Ahern to Drumm to Ratzinger to the brick-chucking advertisement for abortion, they all do what they please regardless of what's right and know that this country doesn't demand decency and accountability.

Thanks for the two links, lads/lasses

That's kinda my point.....is it actually so out-of-whack that decent people have to leave in order to not be soul-destroyed by the low-lifes?

Sad state of affairs if so.

And it begs the question whether - as another poster said - it was always there but less noticeable (maybe due to my idealism or refusal to look for badness in people) or has it actually gotten much worse ?

    Maybe it's a bit of both ?

But again, what can we actually do to stop the rot ?

Appreciate that, LL......and I know that my recent posts have been completely disillusioned given the mentality of those who are supposed to make life better.

Canada might be an option, though - they seem to be "tough but fair".

Whatever about the posts, though, I know for a fact that I wouldn't ever bring a child into this world to live in this country. You have to be a complete unethical prick in order to get anywhere.

But yeah - I think I'll try to avoid becoming cynical and changing to meet the new, lower standards.

Cheers guys - and without turning it into PI and getting the resulting AH slagging......appreciate some of the comments......last night was the straw that broke the camel's back in terms of the level of hope that Ireland could be a fair and ethical country.

Guess it explains a lot in terms of votes for Ahern & Lowry & Healy-Rae; there are enough people of the same mindset around who applaud strokes and screwing others.

Maybe it has always been there but I just tried to ignore it.

I appreciate what happened with the brick was pretty lousy and you need to vent a bit but it's actually a pretty great country to raise a kid in, sounds to me like you just need to get out of the area you're in, move to the countryside man. Every country has the problems you've mentioned to some extent, but they're first world problems and I for one am glad I live in a country where I only have to deal with first world problems.

It didn't happen in the area I live in. I was visiting a friend.

It was in one of the areas that would have been regarded as reasonably good.

And yeah, it rattled me. I would actually (ironically) have more respect for someone who actually STOLE something - at least there's a point to that.

But as I said earlier, don't assume that it's all about that; the goings-on with Ahern, Drumm, Fitzpatrick, the catholic church, and a whole host of other things have really, really made me question whether this country has a future.

Decent people are battered left, right and centre with taxes to fund all of the above, including the ASBO candidates who have no interest in actually RAISING a child.

Einhard, there is some truth in what you say, I'll acknowledge that. But if I was an irresponsible layabout or a completely unethical businessman I'd be rich today. I have said before that I hate over-generalisations, so I should live up to that and acknowledge that some decent people have succeeded, but I think it would be fair to say that that, in general, is "against the odds".

You're right about the tax, the amount we pay here is literally criminal.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,163 ✭✭✭✭Liam Byrne

Small point : the brick wasn't "pretty lousy"; it was criminal damage but the Gardai had no real interest because it wasn't "serious" enough and they were unlikely to get anywhere without CCTV.....and as I said earlier, that's partially a resources problem.

It was, however criminal damage. And phrasing it as anything other than that is wrong.

Ara now, I wasn't trying to trivialise it, it's just a figure of speech I use all the time to refer to all sorts of things ranging from people using up all the milk, to bricks through wind shields, all the way up to car bombs in major european cities.

I appreciate that you weren't "trying" to trivialise it, but the language used to describe crime and other issues in Ireland is having that effect.

"wrong place at the wrong time" is used for victims, even though they were perfectly entitled to be wherever they were at whatever time; it's the scumbag whose actions we should be describing, not the victim's.

Similarly "burning the bondholders" is used to describe "making them face their losses" - again making the required action by the rest of us seem unreasonable.

The cop the other night said "probably someone on the way home drunk from the pub" - I've often done that and it has never led to me doing criminal damage.

I live in Spain and if I felt like it, there's plenty I could come on here an rant about. Corruption, people looking out only for themselves (struggling to carry your suitcase up some stairs in the Metro, for example? No one EVER helps you), the imminent election of anti bloody everything right-wing conservative party later this year, crap salaries, crap labour laws, the exploitation of workers (myself included), careless drivers, sexism, casual racism, police acting like the Falange, crime, murder, small-mindedness... Nowhere is perfect. I try to look for the positives (and there's plenty) and actually get off my hole and DO something about it like join this movement going on here instead moaning on the internet.

Why not be the man to start something??? Not having a go at you, I understand your anger particularly after what happened to your car but it's not everyone, it's not the majority who carry on that way. Most people are good and are decent and are trying to just live their lives and be happy, at least in my experience....there's enough dissatisfaction in the country to start something. I'm not talking about Greek-style revolting but what's going on here in Spain is a good template. Use that anger and DO something.
