TeVii DVB-S2 USB tuner works well for me and drives my dish as well. Fully supports USALS.

What is the benefit of using a USB receiver over using a small STB?

Is it only the means of displaying the channel through the PC?

Makes me wonder if there are alternatives to the 'USB receiver' scheme ....

PCI or PCie card in a desktop is better for Satellite. It's not like portability is a major issue.

The advantages are much more than "able to view" on PC screen. In fact unless the PC screen does 50, 75 or 100Hz it's a disadvantage.

Because the question was related to a Laptop, I did not consider an add-in card ......

So I guess that brings my question to one of ..... is there a (cheap) means to display the output from a STB on a Laptop?

    EDIT
I did not mean my question to take this thread off topic ..... so if it needs its own thread mods please advise, thanks.

If you want to watch satellite on a laptop,
this is what you want, apart from the "cheap" bit.

There is no sensible cheap way to get video from ANYTHING into a laptop at other than Webcam quality. Video in USB sticks are dreadful and most only really do 320x240p, or 640x480i 30fps/60Hz at best. You need minimum of 720 x 576i 25fps 50Hz for Composite video

I'd only buy elgato gear for Mac OS. They are overpriced for PC/Windows/Linux.

If you have a satellite Set-box, buy a proper 50Hz compatible LCD TV for it. Most laptops are fixed 60Hz so inferior for TV watching outside of Japan/Americas

Some of these are obsolete as they don't do DVB-S2
    Hauppauge WinTV-Nova-S USB Satellite Receiver
    Technotrend Connect USB S2400
    TwinHam StarBox (not so good?)
    DVDWorld
    Skystar2 USB (maybe no DVB-S2?)
TechniSat SkyStar USB HD (Does do DVB-S2)
    TeVii (Does do DVB-S2)

Make sure what ever you get does DVB-S2 and has its own power supply. You can't sensibly power an LNB (and not at all a Motor) from USB.

I can power a Chess motor which drives my 80cm dish using my TeVii USB DVB-s2 box.

I have switched happily between 28.2 and 15 west using this kit on a laptop.

The TeVii does have an external power supply so this does give enough power to drive the motor.

Echoing Watty's comments I have yet to see a laptop that can deliver 50Hz video as the standard 60Hz on laptops does not give good video quality. The TeVii is normally connected to my server PC and delivers good quality HD video using the servers 50Hz output.
