not totally. You need to declare it will only be used for commercial purposes if you want to tax it thus. Apprently your PPS number will do in lieu of the VRT number.

are you looking to private tax or commercial tax the vehicle ?

if you are looking for private tax - should be no problem to just tax as normal, if you are looking for commercial tax there was new regulations brought in around 2010 (I think) where you need to declare the vehicle is for commercial use only, as with all commercial vehicles you need to give details of your business when taxing it.

if your business is not registered for VAT - is there a reason why not - are you under the threshhold, you are required to register once you meet or projections are to meet the 37K (ish) for service or €75K ish (sales).

you can claim the VAT you paid on the vehicle back and loads of other items (work related only)

    * I'm possibly wrong but thats my current understanding of the commercial motor tax system at the moment.

afraid with the new rules (Blame the government) thats not permitted !!

The government or whoever made the decision want a commercial vehicle for commercial use only

(its a fairly vague attempt to stop all the soccer moms buying SUV's having them taxed commercially and only used to bring the kid(s) to school and maybe the shopping)

ok..ok its to stop people buying commercial vehicles, and using them for personal use - if you have a legit use for the vehicle for work then tax it commercially.

Dont forget you will need commercial insurance too.

This has been the rule for many years, but lets face it, we ALL use them privately when the opportunity arises. I dont think anyone with a bit of savvy who is using the van mostly as a commercial will have much of a problem. All you need is a few tools in the van or a parcel or claim you are on call or similar. Harder to get away with having kids in the van though!
Tightening the legislation is simply to get the guys taking the pi55 by using a van/4x4 /SUV exclusively as a car.
