    Hey folks,

started running a few weeks back and I ended up getting pains in my legs just above the ankle. Physio recommended getting a proper pair of running shoes.

Just wondering where should I go in Galway for the best advice and purchase?

Will the people in Elverys/Lifestyle know what I need when I go in or am I supposed to supply them with some info about what I want .. because I have no idea what to ask for other than running shoes :p Don't mind spending the money for a decent pair.

I'm not familiar with Galway at all, sorry, but if there's any specialised running shops (as opposed to large all-purpose sports stores) they often do an analysis of your running technique, called a gait analysis, and then they can recommend a shoe that suits you, which will help avoid pain.

I did a quick search and found this boards.ie thread from 2009 which may be of interest (if the information isn't slightly outdated)

    Try Amphibian King in Oranmore.

This- the only real running specialist shop in the Galway Area.

I went into Elverys last night, the guy I spoke to is a regular marathon runner. Seems to know his stuff, they have 2 tests in there showing me running in slow motion to see how I land and how I raise my foot and then recommend the best shoes for me from there.

Theres probably not much more to it than that, he seemed to know what he was talking about and was enthusiastic about it rather than someone reciting a paragraph they learned first day on the job.

Thanks for the recommendations though, didn't purchase my runners yet, pay day is Thursday but probably will stick with Elverys after the help, he gave me a deal on them aswell..sweeeeeet :P

I got my first pair in there (elverys) - they ended up too big and i have sized down since then.

Not saying the same thing will happen again, they do seem to have got in a threadmill since then, but i'd recommend a shop like mile 20 (liosban, tuam road) or Amphibian king (oranmore) first - anytime.

best of luck with the running.

Do Mile20 do their own brand ? The quality of their stuff is good?

i doubt its their own brand but they may stock brands that you wouldnt see all that regular.

The video analysis is informative and helpful but it isnt the solution to all your problems. A member of staff can click a mouse and have you see all this but determining the information recieved is the important part.
Do some research on the results you get before purchase.
In alot of cases of course you may be fine with the choices made but dont rule out overlooked areas if problems arise from running at a later stage.

And for what its worth amphibian king would be my choice for buying

    Just a final update:

    Went to Amphibian King.
Spoke with a lady there who was very helpful and knew her stuff. Did the gait, she got me to try on numerous pairs of shoes and redid the test with each one until we found the right pair for me. Other customers in the shop, but she didn't feel pressured to just fob me off with any pair, took her time and I left with a pair I'm very happy with! :)

Went for my first run in them there, very comfortable and they feel great!

    Thumbs up!
