    Lads,

I probably no the answer to this question but will ask it anyway.:D

    • Irish Man works for UK/NI company.
    • He lives in ROI
    • NI company owns a motor - passenger etc.
    • He uses this for business trips.
    • The car would usually reside in the yard/unit of where he works.
Question is - is it ok for him to drive this car on business to meet clients down in Cork as an example?

He then comes back from Cork and parks up at his house in the south.

The next morning he is back in the office and car is in the north and that night he takes his own ROI car back home etc.

Just trying to get a firm handle on this before I'm escorted to the bus stop!:D

I thought Irish residents (which this guy seems to be) weren't allowed to drive non-ROI registered cars?

    +1

You have a license and the vehicle is legal - then it's okay.

A long time ago a mate of mine used to work for the UK government - his compnay car had no tax or insurance - which is correct for a govn' vehicle back then in the 80's. He used to have explain that to every copper he came across!

(please post all coming across coppers jokes in AH)

There is a special exemption available from the revenue comission for ROI based drivers who work full time in NI. It's pretty difficult to qualify, but based on the inforamation in the OP it would qaulify (think the vehicle has to spend 95% of it's time in NI, which this does).

Might take a while to get that exemption through, but would be worth it if this sort of thing would be a regular occurance. For a once off, I'd be tempted to chance it, but if stopped without the exemption letter, you could end up on the bus home.

You need to apply for an exemption.

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/faqs-vrt.html
a State resident employed by an employer based outside the State (e.g. Northern Ireland) may, on application to Revenue, be entitled to drive (in the State) a foreign registered company vehicle provided as part of a contract of employment,

Even then I think its for company use only and cannot be used for personal purposes.

    Thanks Lads!

It may not be a runner but it is worth looking into though.

I looked into this recently when I was looking at buying a high value car in the North and registering it as a company car to the family business.

I spoke to someone in revenue who posted me the piece of VRT legislation that applies to this. You look 100% fine from what you have described.

Look for section 135 of the Finance Act 1992.

I have the name and number of the lady I was dealing with. PM me if you want them.
