    Hi All,
As the title says I have a 2004 opel astra H diesel 1.7CDTI, about a week or so ago I was driving home and about a mile from my house the car just broke down, literally the eingine just switched off, no warning light on the dash, all athe electrics were fine lights radio etc still working. So I left it for few mins and tried to start her up again but she wouldnt crank over, so called the father and got towed home, tried car again still no start! left the car over night and tried again in the morning and she started up not a bother but the eingine management light was on! but I didn want to chance driving it so rang my uncle who's a mechanic he called out that evening had a look, banged in the computer and it showed the alternator was fecked, so took it out gave it to auto electrician who said regulator was fried put in a new one and completely refurbished the alt, popped her back in last night, eingine light gone took it for drive and bout 2 miles into it she died again!! this time though i left it for 5 mins and she started first time so i chanced driving home got back fine and left her running in the drive-way for half hour and no problems!! I tested the battery with a volt meter and its fine & the oil is ok, its a little dirty the car is due service and timing belt which i had booked in to be done next sat :(
So basically my question is has anyone experienced anything like this before or any ideas on what could be causing it??
    Thanks in advance Greg

What fault code(s) did your uncle pick up when he discovered the alternator was fried..?

havent a clue! unfortunately not very mechanical minded! My uncle is the head mechanic for Opel in Limerick so I took his word for it ha Handheld computer is showing no errors now and he cant find anything mechanically wrong with it! Prob gonna have to bring in to get full diagnostic done on it! My mate had same issue with same model few yrs ago but his turned out to be fuel sencor and ECU surely they would show up on computer? Was hopin someone might have any ideas on here that might help out!!
