Full speed/ Half speed

So i got a new Dual Band Wireless-N modem/router (Netgear DGND3300) because of the disconnection problems i was having with the Zyxel P-660HW-T1 v3 (every 30-90 mins).
Since i got this new modem/router i haven't had a single disconnection problem. But what the problem is, i only get around half the speed of the Zyxel were i would get 13-14Mbps and with the netgear i only top around 6-7Mbps. I am connected via Ethernet.
    So the question is:
    1) Did i setup the netgear modem/router wrong?
i thought it was just plug n play.
    2) Would bridging my Zyxel help and how do i do that?
    Someone suggested that to me
    3) Will i just have to make do with what i have?

Or just none of the above and you have a simple answer for me which would be great.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions
