Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I have a boat and the engine broke down.
It's a perkins 4108 diesel and for a diesel engine, it has'nt done much work.
The main crankshaft broke in two. The problem is, we need to understand why before replacing it.
If anyone has any info, i'd be very grateful.

It is quite rare for a crank to break these days.

Not familiar with the particular engine but it may possibly be cheaper to buy a 2nd hand engine rather than buy a new crankshaft.

Where did the crank break? Can the engine be turned over by hand now? Did it overheat or run low on oil pressure? Are the big end bearings in good order? Did the gearbox seize or select 2 gears at once?

    quick reasons for brokens shaft
    1. complete engine overload
    2. lack of oil in sump / some crank bearing seized ...
    3. crank made of bad material
    4. manufacturing crack in crank not picked up on inspection by manufacturer
    5. flow of grain of material in crank not correct.

Where exactly did it break? any photos?

Don't let the crank out of your possesion.

Very unusual for a Perkins, I'd suspect you've a warranty claim.

This engine was the prefered choice for diesel conversions back in the 'fuel crisis' 70's before the jap diesels became popular. A lot of them lying around the country shoehorned into Hillman Hunters, Humber Sceptres and Ford Zephyrs. My own personal transport 4108 /Humber O/D gearbox / Rover P6, and I honestly can't see this engine having enough power to break it's crankshaft!!. On the warranty , you would be very lucky to receive help because afaik this engine went out of production over 30 years ago.

I'd reckon flawed casting, happens. If the crank bearings are not looking like they have picked up or been starved of oil the crank probably had a defect from new and just decided that it's time had come. Unusual for a perkins, but whadgergonnado.

oil pump might of gave up then no oil pressure would result in the bearings being starved of oil. crank mightn't of broke it could be the shell bearings that have shifted because of friction can it be turned over by hand ?
