Volvo shouldn't call time on the S40 just yet

It seems there's a new niche opening for sub A4/3 Series/C-Class sedans. It is well known already that Audi are going to make a sedan version of their next A3 and now it appears MB are getting in on the act too: http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/AllCars/258392/

An all new Volvo S40 would even stand a good chance of beating it too, since the Merc saloon will be front wheel drive, so you can't even claim the new Merc saloon has premium engineering under its belt.

I lol'd when I read about the 'hot' version (ok that will apparently have 4WD) - it looks like Merc are taking some of the drugs BMW have been taking lately - successor to the 190 Cossie my arse that car will be:rolleyes:!

Audi are going to be doing a similar thing with their new A3 Saloon. They say it's a spiritual successor to the 80.

The problem with modern cars is that as they evolve, they get bigger - it's refreshing to see manufacturers reverting to smaller cars.

I personally reckon that the cars increased in size because of focus groups and perceived needs...

    Looks more BMW than MB.

I read some time back that Volvo were toying with the idea of replacing the S40/V50 with an A3 Sportback type next generation C30. The S40 still sells well for Volvo here and looking at the sales figures since the start of the year it still out sells the more expensive and less equipped bigger S60.

Don't know if the tiny Irish market's affinity for small saloons would justify the investment from the likes of Volvo though unless it was built cheaply in China or some place like that.

A 5 door C30 is in the pipeline. At least I think so anyway.

The S40/V50 have been axed from the American line-up, as they have decided to only sell the stuff that really sells there. The S60/V60 are cleaning up though.

The S40's restricted space and small boot would always be a drawback for the Yanks.

plus its a very dated design at this stage. brother in law never liked the ride in his old s40 and replaced it with a 08 a4 last and has no regrets.

Got an MY12 V50 in the other day - SE LUX so now comes with Sat Nav standard.

First S40/V50 I've ever seen with the built in Sat Nav - had to ring the dealer to find out how to work it! Funny set up with the driver control on the back of the steering wheel, and a remote control for anyone else who want's to p1ss around with it.

Pretty sure that MY12 is the last production of the S40/V50 and I'll be sad to see it go.
