Encryption on Rte movies?

I recorded The Night Listener on Rte1 on Sams Box.

When i went to play it back,You can see the adverts, then it comes to the movie and it goes to a black screen but you can hear the film's sound.

I stop it and play it back at 28 minutes,You can see the adverts then it goes to the film screen and it goes black again.

I stop it and forward it to Shortland street which is on after the movie.
    Perfect picture and sound.

I put the usb stick in my pc and The Night Listener comes on and plays perfectly.
So i am left wondering......Are some movies on Rte encrypted?

I am intrigued. Could you try playing it again from the [Flie List] menu?

That is weird. I would like to know more.

    Hi Sam,
I played it from the FILELIST Menu.
    It does the same thing.

I took a short camera movie clip.
Dont mind the background sound,i live near a busy road.:)

I uploaded it to Mediafire, 10MB size.
As you say,I too am baffled by it.

Jasus, its like an Irishman during the famine protecting his last spud.
If things are that bad that they have to encrypt or block whatever little content they have, they may as well give up now. They are wasting their time, and ours too for that matter.

If it plays back on his PC, it's not encrypted. And everyone would have noticed it too. Some firmware glitch.

i regularly see the encryption flag on rte1+/ RTE JNR.
it comes up in the info banner as a chequered flag type logo.

i've seen it occasionally on RTE2 HD also, but it never effects viewing.
i dont have a DVB-T pvr so i dont know about playback issues

Have you contacted Saorview or RTÉ NL or RTÉ?

Anyone record the movie from Sky or UPC?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭Carter P Fly

if it were encrypted how exactly would anyone be able to view it?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 20,144 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sam Russell

Could it be copy protection [CRM] coming into play, but it is defeated by the PC?

    Did anyone else record it?

Edit: Did you try replaying using the SCART connector? That has no CRM on it.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 20,144 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sam Russell

Another question, was it in HD? They normally have CRM enabled.

Could RTE be testing HD playout of movies?

Does the (original recording) play back when connected to the Box directly ?

It is not beyond possibility that the stream could be manipulated for content management of HD output.

First thing I would think is that the file needs to be rebuilt using TS Doctor.

    It's RTE1. There's no HD content.

Although such moves is something you would asscoiate with HD content, if a broadcaster was testing flags (or flagging incorrectly), it wouldnt matter what the content was !

It is like you said earlier a glitch in the TS which needs to cleaned up by TS Doctor.

Why bother if it's not HD?

Anyway, the idea that RTÉ have come up with a form of CRM which magically allows someone to watch a film but not to copy it is plain daft. It's even more daft as CRM requires the decryption/encryption algorithms to be present in the box firmware (e.g. like the Humax Freeview HD PVRs).

    It's not encrypted.

Oh I agree its not encrypted I dont believe that RTE have any plans to signal to CPCM.

And we all know how the manufacturers of Freeview HD differed in their implementation of decryption for non HD material. Infact this whole area is probably on of the areas that will be an issue with interoperability in border areas given Freeview HD's protection policy vs RTEs lack of.

CRM is the likely culprit as the programme failed to play back but the adverts did. There is no encryption as the programme could be watched live. CRM is enforced by the HDMI interface, so the test would be to see if it can be replayed using the SCART, as that has no CRM embedded in it. Also, the PC sees no problem replaying the programme, which also has no CRM embedded.

Did the OP watch it live?

Sorry to all for not getting back sooner,I was away yesterday.

@Sam I tried using the scart only,it didnt change anything.

@Apogee I didnt watch it live as it was on too late.

    I am stumped.
Any other movie/tv recording i have made has recorded/played perfectly up until now. Before during and after the film if you forward to those points everything plays perfectly. Its only the film that has no picture.

Looking at the movie clip again that i uploaded to Mediafire i see that the screen changes to pink and i can only guess that the film had something not put in other rte programs as i have had no problems before.

Thanks to all who replied and i was just thinking .... perhaps its something out of the paranormal.......The Night Listener where you can only listen to the film but not watch it.:pac:

I took some photo stills of different times of the recording, ads, film(blank screen white circle is the flash from the camera.) and Telebingo,Shortland street after the film.Links below.

I think you should refer it to RTE or RTE NL. Their response is likely to be 'Did you use a Saorview approved STB? Well what do you expect, we do not support non-approved STBs!'

However, you should perservere beyond that, as it is clearly something they have done with flags or something else.

My Panasonic TV shows RTE+1 as an encrypted channel but does display it.

Is the channel flagged differently to the other channels?

My Panasonic TV used to flag RTE ONE+1 as encrypted up to about two days ago. The encryption flag is not there now. Looks like some tweaking going on.

It and RTÉjr now display an MHEG-5 on screen caption when the channel is off-air, might have something to do with it.

No, ch 8 shows as enrypted but ch7 does not. This has been the case for quite a while, but it makes no difference to the channel. It dispalys nevertheless.

I am intereste to know if anyone has had problems with encryption of films that do not allowing recording.
