Banks giving double on small coins?

Anyone remember this? I think at one point the country ran out of small coins or something so the bank agreed to give double the value of any copper coins you brought in to them. I cleaned up iirc, made a massive £20!

I'm guessing it was probably in the early 90s as I had no real dealings with money prior to that. Anyway, maybe someone here can remember it better or has a specific time period of when it occurred? Any info welcome.

I remember it, but am not sure when it was, or indeed why it happened.
