    Hi lads,

Apologies for my complete lack of understanding here. I'm getting very tired of the huge UPC bills coming thru the door. I've only just heard about Freeview boxes down the local pub. Can somebody explain the very basics of these for me.

    Where can I buy one?

What's the best one to buy?

What channels do I get with them?

I require all the sports channels for work purposes.....do you get the SKy Sports plus ESPN Channels on Freeview boxes or am I talking through my rear?

    Sorry for being so clueless....

    Thanks

On Saorview (Irish Freeview) you get the following channels:
    RTE 1
RTE2 (shows some sport in HD)
    TV3
    TG4
    RTE News Now
    3e
    RTE Jr.
    RTE 1+1
    plus all RTE radio channels.

You cannot get any sports channels, or any other channels apart from those listed above.

You can buy the boxes in most electrical retailers.

Basically, Freeview is the UK terrestrial system (i.e. through a tv aerial). Sky Sports 1 & 2 plus ESPN are available for a subscription from several suppliers (BT Vision and TopUpTV) but I don't think these are any cheaper than Sky, and they may not let you subscribe from the Republic.

And as igs4 said, you need to be able to receive the signal. Where do you live? Can you get analogue TV from NI at the moment (or could you get it from Wales before the switchover)?

No - I'm a freelance sports journalist, so s'all from my own pocket.

I wasn't sure if there were freeview options where I could get all the channels I currently have. I hear people talking about Freeview, but I never really understood what was available in those boxes. Thanks for you help lads.

I got a Humax Freeview+ box last week in Newry (you can't buy these in the 26 counties). It has all the Irish channels as Emmetmcl says. I also have a Humax Freesat+ box that I bought down here. The Freesat + box is the business. There is no doubt about that. Freesat have all the non-Irish channels like BBC, ITV etc and others that UPC dont have.

My problem is that I am having great difficulty recording Irish channels on Freeview while watching Freesat. This is a real problem. My workmate is having the same problem.

However, I am glad I am not tied to a subscription but if anyone out there knows how to go around this problem it would be great.

Dont be turned off the above Legends but what I have is the business

    I dont know why I can't record.

Astraltv taught me how to change the remote from the freesat to freeview. I can record Freesat but now can't record Freeview at the same time.

I wonder if there is a problem recording freesat and freeview at the same time but there was some sort of a "lightning bolt" in the "Media-Video" for Freeview indicating a failure in recording but Freesat is grand at a recording

Finally both seem to be working fine but would I have the wrong scart and/or hdmi in the wrong port even though they are both working fine and freesat is recording ???

Some sort of box recognition software whereby the DVB-T box recognises that a SAT box is beside it and decides that it may be recording the same programme off satellite ?

One for conspiracy theorists fora I would imagine!

    @Harolds+
Your Freeview+ receiver (MPEG-2) isn't compatible with Saorview (MPEG-4) which is the reason you can't buy one in the 26 counties.

    Look out for a FreeviewHD+ receiver (MPEG-4).
