Eh its now called Solas.........nice name:D
A new education and training authority is to replace Fás, which is being disbanded, it was announced today.
The new agency, called Solas, hopes to bring a more integrated approach to the provision of further education and training in Ireland.

iI remember when the health boards changed to the hsc,a mate of mine that worked there, said millions were spent changing signs, nameplates and stationary, but little else changed.

    Solas?

They should have called it "I Can't Believe it's not Fás".

'Dorcha' would have been more suitable.

You mean those jobs that made Fas incompetent, overblown organization unable to provide for peoples needs.

They should keep the name, change some of the personnel and not just three people on the top.

    Second rebranding.
    It used to be Anco.
    Something about polishing a turd?

A turd by any other name would reek as vile.

Disband Fas and start Solas. Keep all the same staff, ethics, unions and programmes... yep, seems right.

Its the few at the top that need changing

They wouldn't be allowed to, thousands would be spent drawing and a health and safety plan, and then a 'sparky' would be employed at a call out rate, plus labour to complete the 2 minute job.

I'm not saying that everybody needs changing. But there is no way that keeping old personnel, doing a bit of rebranding and reorganization will suddenly work. If they are supposed to do things differently they probably need people with different skills. I'm waiting in anticipation how many people will be moved internally from one office to another or from a position to a position because they are needed somewhere else. I won't hold my breath.

Sorry but the trainers are useless and years behind, half of them are 'floaters' with courses made up so they have something to teach.

Yep - if this is any indication to go by...

    http://www.thejournal.ie/over-e21500-spent-on-new-departmental-logos-and-signs-187552-Jul2011/
THE GOVERNMENT has spent over €21,500 on new signs, logos and stationery after introducing new departments and changing the names on others, although the amount spent varies between departments – from hundreds to thousands of euros.

Minister Richard Bruton confirmed that his department spent over €10,000 in producing new signage and stationery after its name change to the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation. The department did not fund a new logo.

The Department of Public Expenditure and Reform spent €4,538 on designs for a new logo and headed paper, according to Minister Brendan Howlin.
Last week, Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar said his department spent €264 on its new logo design. Varadkar also said that his department is spending €2,086 to put signs for the new department on each of its three buildings in Dublin.

Over €47,000 has been spent on setting up Minister Brendan Howlin’s offices since the department was established by the Fine Gael-Labour coalition government earlier this year to ensure “the effective management of taxpayers’ money”.

A breakdown of expenses published by the Sunday Times and TheStory.ie at the weekend showed that Howlin’s department spent €47 on a bathroom sign that reads “Minister’s Toilet” and another €47 on a key for its door.

New names, new logos, new signs

Minister Simon Coveney’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has yet to decide issues surrounding a new logo and signage.
Minister Phil Hogan said the Department of Environment, Commuinity and Local Government had amended its own logo internally after being re-named by the new government. He added that labels showing the new name were being affixed to stationery at a cost of €1.92/1,000 sheets. The issue of new signs is under review.
The Minister for the Department of Arts, Jimmy Deenihan, said his department was still using the same logo used under its previous name (which was the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sport). He said his department was amending its signage and “once this process has been completed, it will be possible to quantify costs arising”.
Minister Eamon Gilmore said that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade was not getting a new logo, but had spent €5,066 on replacement signs.
    Window dressing for the masses.

The VEC's are already pulling their hair out over having to redeploy permanent staff from the closing of the Travellers training centres. This is going to cause some serious problems if all FAS staff have to be retained as well. Add the amalgamation of certain VEC's to the mix and this could get really ugly really quick.
Also many of the teaching staff in FAS and the VEC's aren't trained in the future skills needs areas as outlined by the EGSFN so unless there's going to be a huge investment in CPD for staff it could very easily be a case of same ole, same ole.

So how many FAS employees have been finally given the royal boot...not one I bet!

It will be interesting to see what type of quality education and training Solas will come up with....maybe they'll be level 8, 9 or 10 qualifications:D?????

Trick question. The answer is none, they just get loads of interns in to do it for free...

There actually have already been major changes in personnel and the VECs are now in charge of training. New rules about taking a course and connection to your dole are already in.

As with most things here people will roll out the usual things about how there are no changes and everybody working in any government body is an idiot.

I have worked in both private and public sector and there is really little difference to the people working in them. The biggest factors is the age and size of the organization.

There are a lot of people who have never worked in any kind of position who stand and judge. Hint if you haven't been working a full time job for at least 3 years you are clueless and if you never worked in an office for that length of time you are also clueless on how such organizations work or how to improve it.

I wonder will they do anything for redundant apprentices like me that has passed everything in every phase and are just stuck in this bugger of a country because there is no work out there to finish working our 208 weeks that we need to get qualified, I am currently stuck on 201 weeks and when I plead with them this last 2 years to qualify me they simply say, find a job!!! Id have 2 years spent abroad at this stage.

Well it isn't there job to find you a job so that is the major misunderstanding most people have. Don't blame them for the apprentice system they didn't design it.
