App Suggestion - Callback

The cost of roaming can be prohibitive. VOIP calling is an alternative when 3G / WIFI coverage is good which is often not the case.

The likes of Voipgain offer phone to phone voip calling. This doesn't require a good broadband connection. However the call needs to be set up online.

I wonder if it's possible to get an app to set up phone to phone voip calling. Connectivity doesn't have to be great and call savings would be massive. I've looked into easycallback.com but you're stuck to one number only.

I would envisage getting a local sim in whatever country you're in and have that for one leg of call.

You need a data connection for VOIP calling, mobile roaming data rates would probably cost as much as just making a normal roaming call.

If you have a wi-fi connection, then skype would be the easiest option. Just buy some skypeout credit and you can call whomever at decent rates. I've used this a lot in the past and had no problems when abroad.

The thing is that the service provider calls the phone I'm on and connects me to the person I want to call.

The only data I need is to set up the call using the app. This could be crappy and will use only a couple of kb - something akin to the eirtext app

For skype out, I would need good coverage at decent speeds. Plus skype out rates to other mobiles are pretty steep compared with what voipgain charge

If your going to get a local sim why not just use the data on it
