Hey, would anyone recommend Adverts.ie over ebay? I was looking into it but I can't see what their costs are. Any help? Cheers,

Adverts.ie is FREE and eBay isn't. Adverts.ie has a tiny viewership compared to eBay and is not an auction site. That said, if you live in Ballygobackwards and are trying to sell an old b+w TV set then you have more chance on Adverts.ie. However if you have found the Irish Crown Jewels then eBay offers better possibilities but then again a specialist saleroom would be a better bet. Horses for courses. :)

With ebay the asking price goes up, with adverts the asking price goes down.

I've had many a good buy on adverts and sold a few items too, I've never used ebay to sell anything. Donedeal is excellent as well.

Adverts is more of a classifieds site, which means you generally have to go meet the buyer/seller (most of the time). With ebay you'll have to offer delivery as people will expect that

Thats what I like, adverts.ie is a spinoff of boards.ie, there used to be stuff sold on here. I like the fact you can see open discussion about items, and checkout the users history easier (pleased customers etc).

You can quote a high price on adverts and test the water.

Ebay has its place too of course, but they are both quite different in my mind.

Most of the items I've bought have been payment by paypal and delivery by post. can't beat it, also most people charge post at An Post cost so I know instantly how much the total cost will be just by browsing where as on ebay its a lottery what the shipping will be.

I hold no brief for eBay and don't particularly like them but your are incorrect regarding shipping and it is usually cleared displayed. If you aren't sure what the postage will be you can always contact the seller. Anyway, as I said previously comparing Adverts.ie with eBay is not comparing like with like.

No real lottery as said above. If you do not know the postage you should not be bidding -end of story.

With ebay.com and .co.uk and a few others you can sort on ebay by price including shipping, and it recognises your country. For some reason it is not on ebay.ie

If you see high shipping on ebay just look at the overall cost. The higher shipping may be cheaper, as explained here

ebay get a % of the selling price, they do NOT get a cut of the postage

Seller A & Seller B. They both buy an item for €100. They want to make €50 profit on the sale. Postage of the item costs €50. Ebay take around 4% of the sale value

Seller A lists his item as buyitnow for 1cent, postage €200. This means he will make €50 profit (and the 1cent of which ebay take 4%).

Seller B lists his item with the real postage €50, now to still get his €50 profit he has to charge €156.25. Ebay take 4% of his 156.25 leaving him with €150.

So for sellers working on the same margin you can see how the ones charging high postage can afford to offer you an item at a lower cost. I have seen the same seller with 2 auctions for the same product, one with high post the other with low, which were working on this principle.

So if you want the pay the extra €6.25 to ebay so you feel you are not being ripped off, then go right ahead.

What I meant is, if I search for a dress, the listings it should give the price for shipping but either it says contact the seller or gives the 'standard international shipping rate' for the ebayer. So I have to click on each listing, select my country if available or message the seller to find out the shipping before I bid. Of course this is what I do as half of everything I buy is usually from ebay.

Buy If I search for dresses on adverts, I know its unlikely anyone will be offering shipping over €5 for a dress in the ROI.

If you use ebay.co.uk or ebay.com you can sort by "price + p&p: lowest first", then a pop up box will appear and you select your country once. Now all the prices shown will be IRL postage, and sorted accordingly.

Also depending on your browser & settings it will save your country in ebay for next time

It is also best to go to advanced settings and under location select worldwide as your preferred location -this will show more results. ebays search system is terrible.

I know, but only a tiny amount of sellers list Ireland's shipping rates. i have always had my search settings set like this.
