Need help with NI reg car

I was looking through Donedeal.ie and found a 00' Audi A6 on NI plates. It was
ridiculously cheap. So I ring up the guy selling it, he sounds genuine. I asked if I could come down and take a look at it, he asked to meet at a Topaz garage and I agreed (I know stupid of me !). Anyway I hand him the cash and I was on my way home. When I got home I was just checking it over in the garden. Behind the reg plates are another set of reg plates. I checked two of them on Cartell.ie. Both come back as a Grey Audi A6. I don't know what to do, I tried calling him back but he won't answer his phone.

Why would there be 2 sets of plates on a car ? Will I call the Guards ?

I think I might have been conned out of €2K. Any suggestions ?
If it is stolen or wanted, will I get into trouble and will the Garda take the car ?

What details are on the V5 cert he gave you? I assume for the top set of plates? Did you check the VIN against the V5?

It's possible but unlikely that one set are personal plates or the plates were changed and the owner was oo lazy to take one off and just stuck them over the old ones. As I said, highly unlikely though.

Dd you not check chassis number on the car against the one recorded in V5 document which seller must have had when selling you the car?

Kinda sounds like a stolen car.

Get someone with a diagnostic tool to check the vin for you. At least it will give you a definitive answer and will put your mind at ease. Hope it works out ok for you.

Sounds extremely ropey, if I was you I'd do a full paid check on each reg to see which one comes back for your car.

It could have had an old British plate and then been brought into NI and reissued a NI plate. I can't imagine someone not removing the old plates first though. Anyway doing a full reg check on each reg is the only way to find out what's going on.

What about now though? Go out and check do they match.

Sounds like he may not have got any paperwork either because surely after finding the 2 plates, he would be checking stamped vin against his paperwork immediately.

Very relaxed considering you possibly have a stolen car on your drive. I wouldnt sleep if I was in your situation and would be looking for any stamped numbers on the car right now.

When you put it like that, yeah its abit "terrifying". I'm gonna call the Gardaí now and take it from there.

I have no idea where I can find the VIN, anyone know ?

Did you even get the V5, or do you just have the car?

VIN should be visible at the bottom corner of the windscreen, you need to check that against the V5 details. If it doesn't match then call the Gardaí, if it does then do an HPI check.

    Not Your Ornery Onager

If the car is a ringer, the VIN number on the dash could be bogey. I'd be checking the chassis number too.

its quite common to go from NI plates to Uk ones so I assume its the same going Uk to Ni plates...lets hope thats what happened here. I cant beleive a ringer would leave the old ID on the car like that.

This sounds right. Most cars from the UK into NI get new NI plates and only one of the registrations would show up the info on cartell or hpicheck...

OP did you check the VIN number?
If you get a history check done with hpicheck.com they will tell you if the reg changed

The VIN checked out okay with the V5 details. I went down to Coolock Garda station and just explained to them that it had two different reg plates, they said they wouldn't know if it was stolen so they contacted the PSNI. They have no record of it been stolen. It was brought from the UK to NI. They said just don't worry, the cars clean. I just couldn't work out why anyone would leave the old reg plates on the car...

What were the results of the HPI check?

the car my have had a personal reg on it and then the car was sold but the owner kept the personal reg paper work and not the plates.........

if the chassis number on the car matches the paper work dont worry about it

if it doesnt you have lost 2k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very big lesson in this for the OP. Dont go buying a car if you know nothing of the basic checks that should be carried out. The fact that he didnt see a double set of plates on it suggests that the car was not physically checked out whatsoever either.
A 00 Audi A6 on foreign plates doesnt sound cheap a €2k either IMO

+1, if the OP wasn't scammed then it was sheer good luck.
