    would u buy a modern m16 which u could easily change into an m16 vietnam ?

    For reference, the four most common armalite variants (there were all manner of crazy variants, most of which either saw little use or none at all) that would match the OP's wants; either the m16 or m16A1, or else the XM177E1 and E2 variant carbines, all of which saw service during the Vietnam war.

    Depending on how much later the m16 version, the more parts have to be swapped around to get authenticity. Which does of course depend on how close to accurate you want to follow with this. For example, an m16A2 requires fewer external parts swapped than an m16A4 or an m4.
