Just as an aside, when the politicians are put in charge of judicial pay it's all over... justice in this country will be dead.

Shush. Populist rhetoric says slashing judges' pay is more important than separation of powers. Who are you to argue?

    Why no blasphemy law amendment?

And who exactly do you think organised benchmarking from which the judiciary profited so much ? .....the tooth fairy ?

What justice? The justice system has been doing damn shoddy job for a very long time.

Why should they be disconnected to pay cuts the whole country has had? the only against these pay cuts seem to be judges themselves and future wannabes who want in on such a sweet deal.

The only separation we actually have: that between judiciary and the joint legislature/executive. If we hand over the judiciary as well, we might as well just name a dictator for life and get on with it.

As much as I hate the sentences given out by Irish Judges they are not the ones to blame. They are working with a judicial system that is under-equipped to enforce the law. Is there the space available to incarcerate every convicted felon that is deserving of it? Unlikely.

For the Judge's pay referendum: would the monies "saved" by this passing then match the real cost of holding the referendum, and compensate for the loss of doctrine of separation of powers. Doubt it.

It's easier to give a speech in the Dail than make any real action.

Heaven forbid the public might change its mind about something.

Eh, of course, a Government would hardly introduce a referendum they disagree with now would they? Democracy is like that etc.

yes but they basically asked the public their opinion then almost straight away reschedualed the referendum

Sure, but the public could just have told them to **** off. They didn't though and seem to have had a point about the people not being sure what they were saying no to first time around.

and one other yet to be decided.

I'd love to see a newspaper headline:

"In Ireland, opinion polls suggest that 45% are in favour of this referendum, 37% are against it, and 18% are undecided"

Seriously though, these referenda are a farce. Politically they make a lot of sense for the new government - cut the pay of dem nasty fat cat judges YAY. Get rid of those costly tribunals and replace them with free and accountable oireachtas investigations YAY.

We have been promised a referendum on childrens rights for years now. It's Alan Shatter's pet project. But it is highly divisive because the wording is too flawed and gives too much power to social workers. So that's out. We were also supposed to have an amendment abolishing the seanad and reducing numbers in the dail, but that would discommode those newly appointed political cronies who have recently been appointed seanadoir, and no one wants to give up their local TD because that is a loss of power from the country to the folks in Dublin so that's out. Abortion is far too thorny, as is removing God references from the Constitution. Anything that could in any way be devisive is off the table.

So my prediction for the mistery referendum is that it will be for "Puppies and kitten rights, more soverignty and free christmas cheese for all".

Pity the third one couldn't be about reducing the number of TDs per capita as mandated by the Constitution.

The third one will be the one on children's rights. The abolition of the Seanad will likely go ahead. The new gov features many Dubs which is why there's support for reducing excessive local influence on politics. As for the God references, the referendum won't be about that, it will be about removing the reference to blasphemy from the constitution. I'm really annoyed that this last isn't being prioritised.

Any chance of a Lisbon III????

no, it will be called The Paris-Berlin Treaty. And we may as well vote yes, get it over with and welcome in our Franco-Prussian overlords

or people decided that theres only one outcome and accepted it? coincidently in between the 2 referendums my old school had a talk with all 6th years by an eu representative, we were insured before the talk started that it was nothing to do with this, but it transpired that it was all they talked about, even giving out leaflets pens and hats. i was disgusted at this and walked out, not for my opposition to the treaty but the principle of it

People didn't accept there was only one outcome for abortion or divorce despite multiple referenda. If the people genuinely opposed the Lisbon treaty on grounds that they thought were solid then it would not have passed, similar to how abortion is still almost entirely banned in this country despite many, many opportunities for us to change our minds about it.

It's a worry, though it would be pretty simple for the judges to take a reasonable pay cut but many refused. They have shown themselves in a very bad light by not doing what was right.

Dear jebus will this whining every stop.

And let's be clear if one part of the referendum doesn't pass as the government hope they can call it again, it's their legal right. Will we have to listen to years of whining about that too.

Is it possible the third one could be something to do with the recent ruling by the Supreme court that the JLC minimum wage structure was unconstitutional?
