Hi folks what would you reckon the best way forward on this is. Laptop had a 1 year warrenty with Laptops Direct and about 12 weeks outside warrenty the mobo failed. Called Laptops direct and they advised to contact Acer as is was nothign to do with them. Called acer and they would not fix but did take it back to have a look at it (charged 50quid for the hassle). They have now come back and said the mobo has failed and are quoting 600 pounds to fix.
The user called consumer affairs as the laptop is not fit for purpose but as laptops direct.ie are english then that falls outside any irish law for getting an outside warrenty.

Would anyone have any idea if there is a european / english consumer rights dept that can be contacted for this.

See the spec of the laptop below really is a high spec machine to fail so soon.

    The part no required is
    Acer MAIN BD.DIS.HM55.BRO.LF

    Check EU Law.

    http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/+/http://www.berr.gov.uk/whatwedo/consumers/fact-sheets/page38311.html

Essentially the burden of proof is now on the buyer. Research the laptop, and the motherboard online. Find cases of other instances of these boards failing. That eliminates the Seller being able to say it was user neglect if it can be reasonably shown the same faults are occurring in other laptops.

Thats the only forum I can find on the web for that model (see page 32 he has a post on it). The model was discontinued shortly after its release. The owner has a quote from Acer to replace the mobo so thats the only proof of part failure he can get.

Just because it's still for sale, doesn't mean it wouldn't have been discontinued. The manufacture may have discontinued the product, but a few may still be floating about.

What exactly happened? Did the screen stop working, did the graphics go funny, did it just not turn on?
