just curious if there are any good spots around mountbellew area. looking to do a bit of freshwater fishing and taking in a fish every now and again for a nice supper. would like to surf fish as well, but am about an hour or so away from the coast. also if anyone can recommend someone with good second hand gear. all my gear is in america at the moment. just looking for a freshwater setup for the time being. would like to use lures if possible. don't really know much about the local freshwater fish in ireland, so can anyone recommend what might be good eating? not sure if you can get trout around here or not. i really know nothing about fishing here, as you can tell. any ideas would be greatly appreciated. cheers

You're not too far away from Lough Acalla. You need a permit to fish there but it's fairly well stocked with rainbows.

Mountbellew lake is very weedy but winter fishing gives good pike to
20 lbs. Also lots of roach.
Lough Acalla rainbow trout, fly fishing only.
Castlegar river in Mountbellew gives small brown trout, perch, and roach.
    Further down river gives pike.
River Shiven between Newbridge and Ballinamore bridge gives pike.
