Information on soakaways

I'm in the process of digging a soak away in my back garden to take rain water from the roofed side passage between my house and my neighbours.
My understanding was that I should fill the hole with pebbles but from a quick search here and elsewhere I'm thinking that's not necessarily correct.
Can anyone tell me should the hole be filled in, and if so, what is the ideal material?

    Thanks:)

This might help, it's from the UK but I guess similar rules and principle operate here.

Hi Delly, Il ask here because if I revive your old thread im sure you will be inundated with replies. Did it work in the long term. Also after very heavy rainfall how long does it take to clear. My Mother in-law is looking for something similar. Also is there a point in this system where it can become overloaded. ie. None stop rain for 24hours or more= waterlogged garden.

Its actually worked very well over the last few years. It would be hard to gauge how quick the rain clears but even after very heavy falls the next day would be pretty good. You can still feel the ground is wet, but you don't have the squelch of water sitting on top with nowhere to go.

The only downside has been the quality of the grass. I only got one year of nice lush grass as the quality has gone down since despite using lawn food. I think thats just down to the overall make up of the soil which can't be helped.

High I have a site with a water table of 1300mm below Ground Level. The site is level. In theory can a soakaway be used in this site? What is the minimum distance between bottom of inlet pipe and groundwater?
Can 2 or more soakaways be used for this site and be in compliance with BRE Digest 365?

    Thanks
