Berlingo stuck in gear

Dad was driving his van and the gear stick just went all slack. It seems to be stuck in what were guessing is 4th gear. Gear stick just moves around lifelessly!

Just wondering what would be most likely thing! Trying to figure out if this is likely to be a costly repair!

    Thanks!

    What year is the berlingo...?
Sounds like the linkages have came away from the gearbox...

    Cheers, It's a 2005. This a big/costly problem?

Its difficult to know without investigation...If the gear linkages are moving
in on the gearbox them the problem must be in the box itself..this would be costly...you'll have to look in around the gearbox to confirm if the linkages are moving..??

Here is a diagram of the gear linkage on a berlingo..hope you can make it out.
