    Hi All,

I have just started a new job that requires me to have a laptop with XP Pro. This is much harder to source than i taught with all the stores only supplying windows 7 pro.
If anyone knows where i can get a xp pro laptop i would be very grateful.
    Thanks

Your workplace isn't providing the laptop you require for your job?

You can't really get any version of XP anywhere, unless your getting a netbook, and very few have it at that. Microsoft has used its copyright rights ect to stop people selling xp as they want people to move onto 7. You may be able to get a 2nd hand licence somewhere but I'm not sure if thats even legal, it's worth looking into though.

Nope, im going to be contracting for them and they wont provide anything other than their software which will only run on XP Pro.

Yes. Just do a format and do a clean installation.

Or buy a netbook nearly all of them have xp as standard.

Probably not with pro though, could always go for the likes of this

Probably but you'll need a valid CD-Key or it probably won't activate.

You'd also need to make sure there are XP drivers available for the laptop hardware.

Is windows XP mode that comes built in with Windows 7 Professional/Ultimate an option?

    I've never used it.

It should do, but youd need a laptop with atleast 4 gb of ram and an i5 or higher prosessor to make it run smoothly as your basically trying to run another computer inside your computer.

What is the software you need to use could I ask?

It is a chromatography based system used in the pharma industry. There will be a win 7 version out next year but in the meantime i need xp pro. Running win 7 pro in xp mode will not work cortrectly according to my boss. :(

What I'd do is get any Dell Latitude (new or old) laptop, replace the hard disk with a new one and install XP on the new hard disk. Any Dell XP CD will do the trick and there are loads of them about. Keep the original hard disk safe in case you want to switch to Windows 7 next year.

You could just look for refurbished laptops such as

http://www.cheap-it.com/Refurbished+Laptops.htm as per previous post dell lattitude looks ok for the money, if has adequate HD and RAM
