Hey all just thought I would get a few opinions regarding the potential of transgenics or gene therapy to prevent or cure certain illnesses. I know its early days yet but Im a firm believer that transgenics has massive potential. As far as I know there is research into the heart of the zebra fish, which is capable of recovering from severe trauma and its apllications in coronary disease. Is this something which can play a part in modern medicine or is it closer to science fiction at this moment in time in your opinion?

As it stands GT is mostly at the proof of principle stage of things however there is a group in TCD who have developed a GT tech for RP. Of course, two of the biggest problems it faces is reversibility and the fact that so few disorders have a genetic bases...

Haha nice pun with the genetic bases there!;) ah yes doing RP in trinity proud there, got me through a few exams!;) But, yes, gene therapy will I'm sure come into clinical use and be very beneficial but perhaps not to very many people initially.

And the fact they've killed some people in trials with unexpected side effects like cancer etc.
IMO we don't understand all this well enough yet
