    Hi,

Just put a 07 mondeo in for a service and apparently the rear brake pads are 80% gone (100 euro to replace) and the front pads and disc (I think she said discs anyway) are 70% gone. These would cost 280 euro to replace.
These are main ford dealer prices....just wondering are they about normal?

Yeah, not really getting much detail from that reply! Thanks anyway. What would a normal price be?

if it's €280 for 2 new front pads, 2 new discs and rear pads that sounds ok to me.

well since you didn't give the car model 2007 was a change over for mondeos or trim i cant look up what the discs and pads cost for oem

but be sarky if you want

discs i'd assume would be about 60 for a set and pads about 50 and forty front rear, donno if they'd have a waer sensor

rear pad change would be about 5 minutes a side

front dics and pads would be about 45mins all in

so an hours labour is costing 230

but as i said i dont know which model or spec yer care is

Wasn't trying to be sarky, more humorous! Apologies anyway!

It's an older model mondeo 2.0 diesel hatchback.

And to a previous poster it is unfortunately 280 on top of the 100

An hour? Their mechanics, not clones of superman.

    5 minutes a side for brakes...

It would take you that to get a contrary wheel rim off.

mabey i'm doing it wrong but i can change a set of rear pads in 5 min and front discs and pads is not hard either

even so how long do ye think it takes

    its still 230 for labour.

    Quick pricing off micksgarage:

    Front pads - €33
    Rear pads - €30

    Front discs - €94

    Total: €157 parts

Independant garage would probably do better than those prices too. Would an Indy fit all those for under €100?

I can see how someone might remove and refit the same set of pads in 5 mins if the car in on a lift in from of them with wheel off.
I cannot see how a new set of pads would be fitted correctly in that time with suitable inspection and care being taken.

5 minutes me hole, by the time you get the car up, the wheels off,the retainer spring off (without breaking it), the caliper off the piston back, the new pads in (can be fiddly) and everything back together and torqued correctly its more than 5 minutes just for one side.

Bring the discs into the equation and your factoring in an extra 20 minutes per side minimum getting them off with a lump hammer. :D

Plus giving everything a clean, applying copper grease behind the disc for next time. I'd say it took around 1 1/2 hrs for discs + pads.

Especially on the fords since its a floating disc, pretty important that everything is torqued correctly as you'll end up with a snapped bolt or misaligned disc and end up replacing them next year again due to them warping.

All importantly pump up the hydraulic system and make sure the pipes are routed correctly before putting the wheels back on.

its 380 hes been quoted so if the indy did it for 120 hes saving €100

Yeah but what quality are we talking about here at those prices? I presume the prices you got are for QH parts, which are pure $h1te! And then dealing with all the brake squeal after wards because the pads had to be made so cheaply without the anti-squeal backing on them.
I'm not saying that you should always go main dealer for stuff either, but over the years I've learned that cheap isn't always best in the long run.

€380 main dealer versus €257 by your prices, 32% difference in price, so is less hassle & guaranteed quality worth that? That's what you gotta ask yourself.

The main dealers usually just have rebadged Bosch stuff anyway, not crazy expensive either, just as soon as you stick a Volvo/Ford badge on it, it gets expensive.

i got a quote for £110 stg delivered for the discs and pads from (about €128)

The micks garage stuff was Quinton Hazel rubbish. Ford have their own brand of service parts made by their own subsidiary called Motorcraft. You are correct thought that a lot of the German car manufacturers use the likes of ATE, Textar & Jurid for their braking components & most don't even hide that fact either.

You have to check if you are buying spurious pads that the sensors come with them if they are fitted as they can nearly double the price of the pads in some cases as the sensor normally comes with the wiring and connector on it.

Im not saying whether QH are crap or not because I dont know enough about them but i have seen QH pads with what looked to me to be a very reasonable hard rubber compound moulded onto the back of the pad as an anti squeel measure so I disagree with you there.

Are you sure you need to change the sensor if the brakepad warning hasn't come up?

I know on the E46 you can just reuse the sensor anyway, they aren't expensive on it either, about 15 quid, one on the front, one on the back. I presume its a similar setup on the mondeo?

Not sure about the Mondeo. Some sensors wear as the pad wears so they cant be reused. If the warning hasn't come on then maybe they could be reused if they can be removed without damaging them?

No sensors on the Mondeo lads but if the sensor has not triggered the warning light the sensor can be reused. Some can be a cnut to remove.

I think generally there's a little notch in the pad for the sensor to slide in to, so when the pad wears down the sensor makes the circuit off the disc and throws the warning.

I assume if you can put the sensor into the pad you can remove it and put it in another one :)

    Edit:
