ipod nano battery icon not changing to full

I have an ipod nano first generation (retro at this stage)
The battery symbol does not show full after charging. The battery is getting charged but the symbol stays empty.

When I plug it into the mains or my laptop to charge, the symbol changes to green charging or green charged. But as soon as I unplug it the symbol returns to the empty icon.
I have restarted, reset and restored the ipod but nothing has worked. Anything else I can do?

If a restore didn't fix it then it's not a software issue so the battery is probably dead or very near death. Not much you can do other than buy a new battery/send it off and pay apple to repair it/buy a new mp3 player
