Can I claim tax credits ?

I have been hearing for years that I can claim tax credits back from all the taxs Ive paid in my job over the years.

I have heard of people getting cheques back from the tax they paided.

So when in the other day asked about forms and was told that I can only claim for medical/dental/Renting/union fees and thats it ?

Can I still claim tax credits
