On all my ebay items I clearly state:

WILL NOT POST OUTSIDE UK & IRELAND

yet on one item so far I've had 6 people asking if I'll post to them; in Italy, Portugal, Germany, France, Argentina & USA.

It could equally be asked are some eBay sellers idiots? In particular UK sellers who list as only posting to the UK but when contacted will happily agree to post to Ireland. Ebay is like everything else in life and sweeping generalisations are pointless.

I've asked that of multiple sellers before; usually they will agree as long as you're not in scam central (i.e. Italy, Gambia, Nigeria etc.) and willing to pay the higher cost for shipping.

Im the same as previous posters- I have on numerous occasions asked sellers to ship to Ireland even though they state that they dont, and they have nearly always agreed.

They really do limit their potential profits by ruling out most of the world market.

I often ask and over 95% of the time they agree -this is why I would continue to ask. If they clearly state not outside the country I might not bother -i.e. if they actually typed it out in the auction. Many sellers are just ticking boxes without a second thought and some might even think it is on offer worldwide.

Any reason you would turn down these customers? you could make even more off them as they would no doubt expect to pay more shipping and handling. You potentially had a bidding war between 6 people there.

I have offered to pay more for their time to even bother calculating the new postage.

You can block buyers from certain countries, go to your ebay account, then site preferences, selling preferences, postage and packaging preferences and then edit exclude postage locations from your listings

As a matter of interest, if an item is listed with no shipping prices to Ireland and no indication that the seller will ship to Ireland, do people bid first and ask for the postage charge later, or contact the seller first?

    always contact first

You should always email them prior to bidding. Some are fully aware of their postal restrictions and will not post here. I find most will post here once requested but you should never bid before confirmation.

It is unfair on the seller and the other bidders if you wasted everybodies time & effort by ruining an auction. It also leaves you open to an angry or greedy seller saying postage is a huge amount, in some cases this is pretty fair as it includes "handling", they might have to spend time going down the postoffice to determine the postage costs again. They might have ready made packets for local delivery, with postage already known. They might not trust postal services in some countries etc.
