When lining up to hit an iron, i stand behind the ball , mark a point in the grass about 30cm ahead in the direction i wish to hit the ball and then align my legs up with the mark and my ball and hit through the mark.

my uncle asked me about it today during a friendly round and told me to be careful in competions (i havent played any yet)
is this breaking the ''play it as it lies'' rule or any other rule?

    any help would be appreciated

you can achieve the same thing my picking something on the fareway a few feet in front and use that as your aim, this is not breaking the rukes, only breaking rules if you place something there as an alignment aid (like grounding the club in front of ball)

I always pick a divot or a ladies tee or something - Im not sure even if once you have placed the ball your even allowed stand in front of it!
