If he didn't cook it (drive it with the temp needle in the red) the HG replacement in not too expensive and certainly not difficult for a decent mechanic. Couple of hundred more than a timing belt and water pump. If it was cooked it's still repairable but the root cause of the coolant loss should be identified and fixed too.

How reliable are those 1.8 Freelanders? I know someone who is interested in buying one to use it as a run-about and on occasions to tow a boat (not that b big tbh). I've suggested a diesel TD4 instead but he's been offered a 1.8 for decent money and seems keen on it.

The 1.8K isn't the greatest engine to be lugging about a Freelander tbh, not to mind the boat :) In saying that if it's a good one, that isn't losing coolant from the water pump or inlet manifold gasket then it should be fine.

The 4wd system is a bastad on them, many of them are 2wd now
IRD is a common fault. I'd take an early L series engined one happily if it was cheap (TD4 not worth the extra premium over them really), so too a K I suppose but there is more than one or two potential weaknesses on the 1.8K ones.

Any further details of what goes wrong with the 4x4 system? Could a defective one be bought on the cheap and easily repaired?

They look like a nice jeep for light work without being too bulky. I'd be tempted towards a diesel one if it came up at the right price.

Because of the permanent 4x4 uneven tire wear can contribute to the system wearing, the ird transfer box yokes can be got reconned too, most of the non repaired effective ones are butchered to 2wd and work fine as that. I have never really been overly tempted by them, a disco would be more my cup of tea. You'd get an l series diesel for small enough money, if you went in aware of the potential 4wd issue you wouldn't go far wrong, there are some decent threads in the 4x4 section about it. Worth a peak too....http://www.freelanderspecialist.com/freelander-parts/freelander-ird-unit-transfer-box-from-450
