I'm moving into my first home soon and I'm thinking about my options for tv service. What experiences has people had with free to air satellite? Can it be viewed in two separate rooms, and can you get recordable boxes for it like you can with UPC? My tv is approx 8 years old and works fine, could I still use that? The main reason I'm considering satellite is because of no monthly fees. What would the approx cost to install be? What company would you recommend?

Yes you can get it into different rooms - as long as you get at least 2 cables out of your LNB on your dish.

If you want to have a recorder, then each receiver will need 2 inputs from the LBN, so if you want to have 2 recorders in 2 different rooms you will need at least a QUAD LNB with 4 outputs, and 4 cables coming into the house. Or you could have 1 recorder in your main room, and just single tuner receivers in other rooms, meaning only one cable coming into each additional room.

If you get a Freesat HD box, remember that you will not get HD channels unless you have a HD TV. I assume you own an old CRT (i.e,. heavy, glass tubed) TV? If so, and you plan to stick with it, then SD (standard definition) receivers will do you. These are quite cheap.

Also, you can receive Saorview, Irelands own FTA service received through your aerial on the roof.

As for cost of install, thats a difficult question, and often depends on who you get. Often a lot of variation in price.
