Brake pads question

Driving a golf that just passed NCT 6 weeks ago.

Last week I noticed a screechy type noise when I brake coming from the rear of car. Had car in for service in a dealer I don't usually go to. Mechanic came to me and said car needs front and rear brake pads and rear discs and in his opinion it would be dangerous to leave without getting them right away.

I hadn't time to get them done so left. I was quoted a little over 450 to have this done. Also recommended new wipers for €50.

From talking to people over the last couple of days, most have said they'd be hesitant to get work done without another garage looking at car first to make sure I actually need all that. I would have thought if all that work was needed, it would have failed the NCT or at least NCT guy would have said you'll need these done soon enough.

Can someone recommend a garage in South Dublin? Or any advice would be good.

The NCT dont really care how much pad or disk is left they only want to know if they are in working order. Your going to need front + rear pads and disks just like your mechanic says. you've left it get a bit over due so you would want to get them replaced ASAP. €450 is a rip off by the way.

    Check them yourself:
    http://autorepair.about.com/od/regularmaintenance/qt/brake_inspect.htm

Screeching noise could be the pads are worn down to the metal or the retainer spring is broken/missing.

Its all too common that a Garage says you have to replace the whole lot.

Doing a DIY Job on mine i'd expect to pay around 250 euros for parts to do all four corners.

NCT might fault a badly worn disc iirc. Happened someone I know (I think) :)

Yep, it there is a very decent lip on it they may fail it, they don't measure the thickness against manufacturers spec though.

as mentioned above nct test is only valid for the time it is being tested. things can go wrong straight away.
i had a car in the day after having a test with total brake failure.
when we pulled the wheels it had blown a brake hose which had caused the failure. however the pads were worn to around 1mm of friction material the discs were 3mm below minimum spec and the rear wheel cylinders were leaking brake fluid.
    so it happens.
