Just saw this story on my yahoo account. Feel so sorry for the daughter. what a tragic thing to happen :(

    http://uk.news.yahoo.com/mum-killed-learner-driver-daughter-103406252.html
A woman has died after her 17-year-old learner driver daughter accidentally reversed a car into her.

Sue Duke, 41, was helping her daughter Lauren back into a parking space of the social club where she worked in Cuxton, Kent, when she was crushed against another vehicle.

She suffered serious head injuries after being hit by the Ford Ka on Monday.

The mother of three was airlifted to a London hospital where she died on Wednesday night with her family around her.

One witness, who declined to be named, told Kent Online: "At first we didn't realise Sue had been hit, we just saw the damage to the car. But then we saw Sue lying on the ground.

"She had been hit on the head, there was blood everywhere. It was catastrophic. We just tried to help her and comfort her before an ambulance got there.

"The girl was hysterical, she was screaming and crying. It was so awful. We tried to calm her down but she was so upset."

Doesnt matter in this case as the mother was crushed between another surface. Could be 5mph but once the damage is done it's done.

Pretty sad. My condolences to the family.

This girl is never going to be right. Years of therapy in her future =/

Thats neither big , clever or at all funny . A time and a place for everything and maybe you should learn when .
A poor young girl of 17 must be deeply traumatised and may never ever be able to forgive herself .God love them all .

She'll never be able to look at her family the same again. Can you imagine facing your father after something like this, the weight of guilt. You wouldn't be able to get support from those you usually rely on for it, and you couldn't expect it of them. Tragic. Poor girl.

I wasn't going to, but I decided to log in and thank it.

Sure it was crass, tasteless and not exactly hilarious but this is AH and I'm not a fan of sanctimonious high-horse riding in here.

I'm still trying to figure out how she got head injuries and how the daughter didn't realise she'd hit her (like did she not call out or something?)..

But nonetheless, it's a very sad situation.

Failure to heed basic safety measures around vehicles, to put it bluntly.

I was giving a class on such a subject over the weekend, actually. Never stand between a running vehicle and another object, and never stand in proximity of and directly in front of, or behind, a running vehicle. And that's with drivers who know what they're doing. People accidently let clutches slip, some vehicles can neutral steer... and all that you do is provide some cushioning to reduce the damage done to the vehicle when it strikes something hard.

    NTM

This must be disastrously tough on family realtions with the girl.

How can you kill someone by reversing over them, didn't think you could reverse that fast?

Just be careful when reversing that high horse of yours.

It happened to an American tourist in Kerry a few weeks back. She was on Inch beach taking a photo when a surf bus reversed over her.

Male driver by the way in case anyone wants to assume that the driver was female (with hilarious consequences )

This is basic common sense, I can barely believe they need a class to teach this.

In some families maybe, but I would imagine not in the majority. I would imagine her relatives are able to recognise the fact that it was an accident and would do their best to help her through this. It would be a pretty poor father who would blame his own child for this, although I know there are enough out there who would.

If it was a stranger the guilt would be absolutely horrible, but her own mother? I can't even imagine how she feels.

Could have fallen on the ground and banged her head when her legs were injured. Could have been knocked backwards against the other car. Many possibilities.

Poor woman. And her poor daughter... :(

similar thing happend a family member of mine when he was 15/16, driving his mums car around their house and accidentally reversed into his grandmother who was bent over tending to some flowers next to a wall.

    She died too!!

Can we get an R.I.P forum for people to 'pay their respects' every time something tragic happens and keep it out of AH?

    That way everybody wins.......

......well, everybody except the poor guy that croaked it

Why? Every death is a tragedy, we'd be up to our arses in condolences before you could say "Yore Ma".

one of the reasons why people learning to drive must be accompanied is so the competant driver can take control or give advice. Do we know if the girl was on her own in the car ? Do we know how many lessons she had ?

The incident is somewhere between a freak accident in the case of a competant driver and a totally preventable one in the case of a driver who isn't safe to drive on their own.

Knowing some headstrong women who woudn't listen when learning to drive I can easily imagine that there are many near misses.

60% of accident claims in the UK included whiplash

    the family could sue her

    +1

AH is a meant to be a light-hearted place. These "Och, deary me. Isn't it terrible. bla bla" threads are more suited to somewhere else.

Having them here is like a "There is no god, so there" thread in Christianity or a thread with the title "Why women should stick to the kitchen" in the Ladies' Lounge.

If they are to be here, they should get the AH treatment. In other words, the girl blasted her ma with piss except that the piss was a car and instead of being blasted, it was driven - backwards.
