Thinking about getting a 98 C36 amg, the only thing that worries me are the servicing costs.
Ive had C class mers before and found them cheap enough to maintain but does a C36 require alot more money to maintain?
    anyone any experience of these?

    Edit.....its between a C36 OR a Jag XJR

A 98 will be one of the last of them, the C43 came out in that year. From memory, the engine is a bit less reliable than the 2.8 that it's based on. I'd imagine at this age that a lot of it will be down to how well the car's been cared for.

:( my old C280 - miss it. 180k miles on it and continued purring. Everything else went to poo though ....

    I dont want an M3.

A friend of mine has a 1994 C280 that used to be mine - he was trying to sell it last year, but decided to sell his E46 instead and keep the Mercedes as his main car. It's a nice one - very well specified, Becker radie etc, and always properly cared-for. I could ask, although it won't be as quick as a C36?

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

A V8 E38 would be a lot cheaper to buy and run than the straight 6 C36!

But if you want an AMG, surely you should go for the C43 V8?

I know it's not in the same leauge as an AMG but a Mazda6 MPS might be worth considering?

A good way to spend 4 grand i think.

Budget is max 4k....this is a second car...it will get well used.
    I have seen nice 7'ers for 1-2k

You can keep them off and consider the MPS - 2.3 turbo, a whopping €860 a year to tax, c. 24mpg and 2000spg :D

C43 is more desirable and can be had for similar money

Precisely. Saving you a good bit on purchase. Insurance will be cheaper and, at a guess, maintenance too. The M62 V8 engine is reliable. And the max tax doesn't bother you in either case :D

With your budget I'd go for a very late ('01) 740 4.4l with as good a spec as you can get :)
