ASO of Rural Booster Stations

Just a small note to state that an unofficial ASO has begun today: one of the two Kilcar (Co Donegal) booster stations was switched off today. It provided the main UK and Irish stations to areas like The Glen.

As most wouldn't have VHF antennas to pick up RTÉ from Sligo since the booster transmitted on UHF, it means that it's either satellite or nothing for those that don't have a Saorview box. However, I've heard that part of the reason for switching off the booster was that many homes have now installed satellite to pick up the UK stations.

I am wondering if this the first of the booster stations to be switched off prior as a result of the official ASO next year?

They are all to be switched off by next year anyway. Most people have gone satellite and I reckon a lot of these deflectors willl not last the winter with nothing coming in to pay the electricity.

Brougher is gone next april and with it all Donegal deflectors.

Which one shut down Packie Haughey's or Seamus Doogan's?

Unless they use a Sky box or another FTA satellite receiver as a source to retransmit UK channels. The deflector at Westport in Mayo does it this way.

Probably not April now, a minimum of 12 months notice is given prior to DSO. Most likely to take place between Sept and Dec 2012.

Next April the focus will be on the London DSO.

Yes. "Sam the Aerialman" thinks it may be November 2012, same as Divis.

All deflector licences expire in Dec 2012, no further renewal.

Just after checking which one it is now - it's the one that comes under Séamus Doogan's.

Kilcar village wouldn't be in an overly healthy spot for Saorview.

You're right, the village itself is in a hollow. Some houses can get it Up the Glen (Ballymacfadden, for example) with a low enough but steady signal strength but this is probably because most of the houses are partly up the hill and so have a view of the sea. For most people, it looks like Saorview .. or Sky .. will be their only option, I think.

    No

RTE TV at Fountainstown, Co Cork with 'self Help' status certainly went off air sometime earlier this year. This was transmitted from a SCTV site at a place called Ringabella across water. Many in that area would have now no option but satellite to get RTE.
A couple of other small places in Co. Cork had a similar situation of RTE from SCTV masts. I think they are gone as well.

I'm one of those without Saorview coverage, I only hope the local community transmitter here currently giving us RTÉ, TG4 and TV3, doesn't get switched off before Saorsat is up and running properly, that would be annoying.
