Hi All I have a Compaq presario 6000 home computer it was working perfect yesterday when I went to turn it on today nothing happens, I thought there maybe a fuse inside so I took out the power and slid off the side panel, I was looking in and moving cables when there was a loud bang thankfully nothing happened to me. Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong with it, I will take it to a PC guy tomorrow if I cant get it working. Also if its finished and I purchase a new PC how can I transfer all the stuff on my old drive, the PC is 8 years old.

    Thanks for any help

You opened the power supply unit and started poking around in it?! When you didn't know what you were doing? You're really lucky not to be hurt.

The power supply unit probably died - or it's dead now. You can get it replaced and it shouldn't be too expensive.

If you're going to get a new PC you can have the drive with your documents plugged into the new PC - either internally or in a USB enclosure - and transferred them across.

Thanks for the reply Odaise Gaelach I do know about electrics and am pretty handy but did not expect the spark that happened especially in a computer , one other thing is there a fuse anywher in the computer, will any PC guy be able to sort it out.

If there was a bang then something is most likely buggered in the power supply. A PC guy will probably have a spare desktop or 2 that he can cannibalise a a suitable power supply from to see if everything else is working okay. Then you can decide what to do.

I'd be wary of spending anything on an 8-year old machine though. Just take it as a sign and get a new one. Even the most basic of new machines will be a lot better than what you have. The old disk drive will be fine and you can copy anything you need from it onto the new machine.

A blown electrolytic capacitor in the power supply is a likely candidate - they can make quite a bang...

Is there now a smell of electrolyte from the power supply?

Installing a new one is very easy:

Rule 1 of PC Maintenance: Never ever ever open a Power supply unit, if it's faulty, bin it. You were lucky.
You'll have to get a new PSU

You say you know abou eletrics, this is a computer not a toaster. Frist of all, you never open a computer PSU or any other PSU , there no fuse the fuse in in the plug , it basically a setp down transformer. It converst 220V to 5v for use by hrad drive. I know about how cars work , but never change a engine I'd leve that to the mechanic.

I know some of you maigh think i'm being harsh on the OP, but he could have killed himself . Pleople shold not mess with things the know about .

Thank you very much guys for all the replies and hands up I am lucky that I was not killed, I never thought that a compuer would hold power like I know a TV does, I will take it to a PC repair to get it fixed and if its to dear I will replace it.

Once again thanks for the help and the wrap on the knuckles I deserve them. I will never do that again. If I have to replace it any tips on the best base station out there at present.
