Gynecologist appointment

This problem doesn't affect me directly but my girlfriend. She has an appointment to see a gynecologist. However, she has calculated that she will get her period on the appointment date. She is unsure of what to do. She is worried that if she postpones the appointment that she will not get one for another few months. She will probably need an ultrasound but will the gynecologist have to carryout a standard examination anyway? She is having difficulty getting in contact with the gynecologist directly and doesn't want to speak in detail to the secretary/admin. Is postponement the only option if she has her period on that day?

You need to get her to ring the gynaecologist's office. And she's not gonna be able to get in contact with the gynae directly - he/she is presumably very busy. Why doesn't she want to speak in detail to his secretary? She needs to get over it - she's the secretary of a gynaecologist, she has heard this stuff a million times before, your girlfriend's situation of a period on her appointment date is nothing new.

I don't understand what the problem is and why she won't speak to the secretary.

even gp secretaries (for smears) are used to this - a simple 'i'll have my period on the date of my scheduled appointment. do i need to rearrange it?' will do. they hear it all the time.

I have had 2 transvaginal ultrasounds on my period by a gynae, they are well used to it, and depending on the problem, can actually tell them more about it if it is to do with periods.

The first one I rang the receptionist and she was so "yeah, dont worry, its fine, keep your appointment" and the other time I had to go in specifically on day 2 of my period to get the ultrasound as they needed certain information that only day 2 could give them.

Show her this, and tell her that its perfectly normal to ring and just check.

They sometimes suggest that you go to the bathroom (to remove tampon/clean up with a babywipe or whatever) before the exam, but if not, she can ask and it will be fine. Bring extra sanitary protection to replace after the exam.

For some issues they prefer if you do have your peroid at the time of examanation, of course depending on what you are going for. As my luck goes I always have my peroid when going for these types of appointments. It has never caused an issue but its kinda of embarrasing for me but they see it every day so I just get over it.

It really isn't a big deal. I've also had TV ultrasounds done whilst on my period, and once you get over the first 5 seconds of mortification, it's honestly, genuinely fine.

They see a lot worse than periods, I'd imagine.

Thanks for all the advice, she seems a bit more reassured now. She was just worried about rearranging the appointment in case I couldn't go with her as I had to book that day from work well in advance. She didn't want to go on her own as her appointment scares her to bits. Hopefully it will all go fine, thanks again for all the helpful replies.
