I really don't get the whole 'lets make every movie 3D' thing that's going on now in the industry.

To me, after the first 10 mins you don't really notice it and I often feel the picture quality suffers as a result. It seems blurry or something!

    Maybe its my eyes!!

I saw 'Toy Story 3: 3D' in an IMAX cinema in Miami last Summer..

.. and it didn't do it any favours tbh!

pointless gimmick imho. Made worse by the fact that 2 out of the past 3 I've been to see in UGC were out of focus, if its the saviour of the movie industry they really should make sure that the movies are projected properly. Won't ever be wasting my money them again.

Ive heard this also your eyes are amazed by it in the begining but after awhile they become acustomed to and your mind begins to concentarate more on story and characters etc so you dont see it anymore! Every now and then you may snap out of it so to speak and you will see the 3D ffect again! The picture doesnt become blurry for me but my eyes get very tired and red during the film!! I think the whole thing is a money racket! I never pay the extra for it unless the kids insist! icon6.gif

I know it goes against the grain of popular opinion, but I love 3D. Yes it's a gimmick, but so was HD. Now it's the industry standard.

My only gripe is that I wear glasses so have to wear two pairs in 3D

My opinion has changed from 'meh' to 'KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!'.

Potentially the worst trend to have **** up cinema.

Well now I wouldn't compare HD with 3D. HD is hardly a 'gimick'. Its an improvement on picture and sound quality.

3D was a gimick in the 50's and it seems to have made some sort of a come back lately. It will die out again I believe. (hopefully)

Don't care what anyone says but Avatar was fcuking awesome in 3D.

Avatar, Jackass, Transformers all look amazing in it, meh for everything else. Unless its shot in 3D I aint going to it anymore, cant imagine you could make out anything in Deathly Hallows its dark as hell in the 2D version

My Bloody Valentine had a good use of effects for 3D. Could be wrong I think it was developed around 3D specifically.

Last film I saw in 3D was Tron Legacy and I swore it would be the last. I have much weaker vision in my left eye so it's possible I can't see 3D properly. Either that or it's really as crap as it looks.

    HD was never a gimmick.

Avatar was okay, a distraction from that bland plot.. oh oh!

Saw some horror movie in 3d worked really well, because it was a bit of fun and the 3d bits had a bit of a punch to them.

Anything over an hour an a half is just tedious, usually it look crap, but in years to come the technology will improve but if they continue to saturate the market with it who will care.

I really enjoyed both Avatar and Transformers 3 in 3D. In both case I wouldn't have enjoyed them as much, if at all, in 2D. I've also seen Piranha 3D and Tron in 3D, in both case I don't think it added anything to the film, and possibly even took away from it. I think it's mostly a gimmick, and done right and in the right movie a gimmick can be good fun and enjoyable, but I hate this trend of making everything in 3D.

The effect in Tron was pretty weak, even unnoticeable most of the time, I found myself taking the glasses off a few times to check if they were making any difference. The concept was great, they showed the 'real' world in 2D and then switched to 3D for the computer world, but the weakness of the effect ruined any impact it might have had.

I would say that the only film I have seen which I found the 3-D really added anything was Coraline. Everything else - including Avatar - I could pretty much have left without. Since wasting money I didn't have on Tron and Thor, I've pretty much sworn off 3-D now, and will be going to see Harry Potter this evening in two-dimensions-thank-you-very-much.

Between headaches and sore eyes it really isn't worth it for me.

Saw avatar in 2D when it came out and thought it was pretty crap. Became pretty irritating people telling me it's really good if you see it in 3D.. what sort of film requires 3D to be in anyway decent.

But.. went and saw transformers in 3D, must admit some of the effects pretty much had me smiling. Film was alright, but thought the 3D really did add something for once.

I gave it a good shot, but stereoscopy is not really 3D, and I've yet to see a film-maker make anything of it. I don't think the current '3D' technology will last.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,377 ✭✭✭Warper

Its a novelty and should stay that way. Once every couple of years is enough really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭azezil

As others have said I find 3D hard on the eyes and gives me a headache.
I saw Avatar in 2D first then 3D, the only difference I noticed was a bit of dirt being flung at my face when he was running and bits of burning tree falling. Big freakin woop, did nothing to improve the movie and most of the time I didn't even notice it.

    Videogames is where it lies
Indeed.. the first great use of 3D technology in video-games:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,338 ✭✭✭✭Busi_Girl08

For some movies, it's pretty much the only thing it's got going for it (Avatar)
For others, it is unnecessary and just takes away from it (Thor)

Then there are some where it does work (imo Alice in Wonderland)

The gimmick has pretty much run its course now, though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,383 ✭✭✭emeraldstar

I hate it. It's just a gimmick. And one which allows them to charge more.

And the glasses are annoying

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

I thought the 3D was good in Ice age 3.

But usually I don't think it adds much. It seems to have a much narrower depth of field than 2D movies. So you notice things out of focus much more.

I saw the last Harry Potter in 3D recently, and I didn't really think it added much to it.

We've tended to avoid the 3D with kids as often the glasses don't fit, and it makes the movies much more expensive with large groups.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,578 ✭✭✭✭Turtwig

In all honesty it depends how the movie was made. If 3D is just post production tacked on then it's usually sh1t and a utter waste of time. I thought Transformers 3 was worth the admissions price alone for that awesome wingsuit scene in 3D. It was marvelous!. One thing no one has really mentioned yet though, so I'll mention it, is how sh1t Irish cinema's are. They are way behind the ones in the U.S. 3D is awesome when used and projected correctly.:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,984 ✭✭✭Venom

For the most part I feel 3D movies are just a gimmick to fleece a few extra euros from customers. For every Avatar, TF3 and Hobbit that are shot in 3D we get 100's of 2D movies with a couple of 3D effects to get you to pay for the glasses.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 12,548 Mod ✭✭✭✭Amirani

Don't like it whatsoever. Makes the projection itself darker and simply becomes a distraction.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,783 ✭✭✭Hank_Jones

Don't go see 3D films at all any more, boycotted them.

Have actually avoided seeing films in my local cinema because they were only available in 3D.

Which is the main thing that bothers me about it now,
cinemas have all these 3D screens and that means less films shown in 2D.
Also means that the cinema is more likely to show popular trash than cultural cinema. :(

It'll eventually become there by default, and only for the films where it's suitable, the effect doesn't have to be in your face to make it worth it, it's about immersion in the film itself, and 3D can help that.

It has, however, become the punch bag for everything that is wrong with cinema/hollywood for the last 2 years, so the ire of endless sequels etc, gets redirected to 3D because it's changing things (and some people hate change, especially when they can rant about it on the internet).

Can a 3d movie be watched in 2d by wearing glasses with the same polarization on both eyes? Eventually I doubt there will be a differentiation between 3d and non 3d screens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,618 ✭✭✭Mr Freeze

I think 3D is one of the worst things to happen to film making ever.

They tack it on to films now that would have went straight to DVD and pop them into the cinema instead. That Piranha film for example.

Since Avatar and the horde of 3D films that followed came along, I have gone to the cinema less and less.

I can't see the 3D effects so I'll never know:( and so I hate paying extra to wear glasses that just make the movie look normal:p

I recently saw Terminator 2 - 3D in Orlando and the 3D was incredible. It's 15 years old and is still absolutley amazing. Whatever tech they used to make it in conjuction with the projectors & glasses in the cinema - it all seems to be calibrated perfectly and as such the 3D is very impressive.

What we have over here is watered down crap - I'm not sure if the tech is just not there, the projectors aren't calibrated properly, the glasses are too cheap - who knows but it just doesn't work the way it's supposed to and 9/10 is a complete waste of time.

Also, there's plenty of rumours that 3d was brought back from the dead by studios as an anti-piracy technique.

I cannot stand 3D and the sooner it dies out the better.

As one person said above what it even more annoying is the cinema's pushing 3D instead of 2D.

For example in my local cinema when Harry Potter came out they had nearly 12 showings of it in 3D for the first couple of days and only 5 showings on it in 2D in the smaller cinemas. I was lucky to have pre-booked my tickets for 2D but the 2D showings were all sold out, not one of the 3D showings sold out and still the cinema were trying to force people into buying the 3D but alot of people I know said they said they would wait for 3 or 4 days to see it in 2D rather than be forced to buy 3D tickets

If they had any sense they would have put the 2D in the larger cinema and the 3D in a smaller one as it was obvious people were not opting for it.

Even now they have the 2D in the smallest cinema, which is so small and I hate seeing movies in it, & one showing a day were as the 3D is still showing in one of the bigger one and is on 4 day a day.

Hate it to be honest, if only they showed more movies on digital projectors! Every now and then I get caught out by wanting to see a certain movie and there not being enough options to see it in 2D, but apart from that I'd never choose to watch a movie in 3D!

3D is a gimmick pure and simple, ive seen it done well in avatar and TF3, both films would have worked perfectly fine without it though, and i saw clash of the titans, my bloody valentine which were brutal,

they were to dark and seemed to lack fluid motion in parts which all 3D films do as there shot at 24FPS which isnt enough to get the normal smooth motion onto a 3D print,

i heard peter jackson is filming the hobbit at 48FPS which i think will be even worse on the eyes, it seems like itll be an overload of images that a lot of people won be able to process, thus more sore eyes and splitting headaches,

also on the darkness note, i was reading that michael bay insisted that brighter prints of TF3 were issued instead of the usually darker ones, which done a much better job on the 3D, i remember after reading that thinking how ****ing retarded all the other muppets were giving out dark prints when they could have just printed brighter prints, its like the blind leading the blind and michael bay seems to be the one eyed man:rolleyes:,

i think its more about the film being in the right hands than the film itself, TF3 didnt really require a 3D conversion as the previous 2 proved, but to be fair to michael bay he knows how to use his equipment very well, and i would trust him to do a good job, on the other hand i wouldnt let david yates use 3D technology cause i simply dont believe he know how to get the best out of it,

so even though i dislike 3D i went to see TF3 in 3D with no hesitation, but then i went out of my way to another cinema 20 miles away with a smaller screen to see HP8, and captain america, thankfully the summer blockbusters are coming to an end for another year so most films should be coming out in good old fashioned 2D:)

I don't know whether it's some visual defect on my part, or I'm just unlucky and all the cinemas I've watched 3D in over the past few years have been sub-standard, but 3D actually degrades my viewing experience. I watched Captain America this week, and the 3D version was so dark that I couldn't make out the background in some scenes. Several times I've actually swapped glasses because I thought they were at fault, but to no avail. I quite like the idea of 3D, but as long as it negatively impacts my viewing experience, I'm totally against it.

I really hate 3D. I saw Avatar in 3D and really wanted to like it but it was just so dark. Im glad to see that it wasn't just me. I took off the glasses a few times to watch the movie as the 3D really took away from it.

I really wanted to see Transformers 3 recently (my guilty pleasure!) but its only available in 3D in my local cinema, so I'll probably have to skip it until it comes out on DVD, which is not ideal, as I love the cinema experience.

One of the biggest downsides to 3D is that movies made for 3D don't appear near as good in 2D. If you can, find a decent quality cinema to see Transformers, otherwise when it comes out on DVD I suspect you'll be very disappointed as some action sequences will appear off or not quite right for some reason.

I read the review in the Irish Times of Captain America, which Mr Clarke saw in 3d he complained about the screen being dark, seriously like wtf, pirated movies appear to have better quality than some Irish Cinemas!?

I can't see in 3D either. It's a bìtch at my local cinema because they tend to have one 2D showing of a film for every three 3D films so most of the time I have to go either in the afternoon on a weekday or at eleven at night.

The problem with 3D is that it is only ever great if it was originally shot using 3D cameras, it was designed especially in 3D and it was meant to be 3D from the beginning. Instead what we are getting are movies that want to jump in on the 3D bandwagon by retrofitting their movies and, when they do, it might only be for a few scenes.

They need to figure out where to best use 3D in movies. Yes for animation, yes for documentaries/sports, but otherwise hell no! Avatar was amazing in 3D - I'm not going to deny that - but only when the action took place on Pandora itself.

Cant wait until it becomes standard. Then maybe they'll release 2 of my favourite movies, All the Presidents Men and Schindlers List, in glorious 3d.:D
