What's the opinion on adding a sub to your monitor system.

I know there are technical issues with placement, phase, coupling etc. but what are the Brothers experience in this area ?

I've recently acquired a Yamaha YST -SW50 sub and am experimenting.
First impressions are that, even if it's not particularly accurate, it may be useful as a reference to what stuff may sound like on a 2.1 home system.

    Any thoughts ?

It's probably a really bad idea to use them for monitoring.

A long the lines of using home stereo speakers for monitoring.

Those subs are designed for boosting the bass on a flat recording. By using them you'll probably actually use less bass than you normally would.

They might reveal stuff you're not going to hear on ordinary monitors - and if you want to put in really low bass booms, you'd probably need them. Or if you were doing sound for cinema/surround - and you wanted to hear the low rumbles. For music is might be a bad idea. Though it might be good to check there's nothing there - like a low dirty sound you don't want.

Get a really good sub on isolation pads 6 inches higher than and equidistant from your standard studio monitors.

Then take it down, reverse wire to an XLR jack and lash it on the kick. Mmmm. Subkick.

i heard one with some ns10s once and it sounded pretty good , but i think the crossover was up about 80 or 100 hz

i find the focal monitors go really deep in a good room .

dont most people filter off real low end though on mastering ?
    like around 20 or 30 hz ?
