I was thinking of getting rid of my NTL package as its costing me too much every month. I was wondering if I got a saorview and sat combi box could I connect the sat dish I have to it an the ntl 'pipe' we get free into the box to get the new saorview channels or do I actually need an ariel installed on the roof too?

    Cheers

    Tunner

You need an aerial, take a look here.

You may not need an aerial on the roof, depending on where you live. Some people find success with cheap €2 rabbits ears or a more expensive indoor aerial with a built in amplifier (which only helps somewhat and is not worth paying much more for, certainly not over €20), some with an aerial put up in the attic by themselves and some need to get an aerial put up outside and some will need an aerial installed at chimney level.

    Check your coverage here: http://coverage.rtenl.ie/index.php

That site doesn't tell how strong the signal is, only that it's at least strong enough for a chimney top aerial to work (essentially). If you're only a few miles or less from where your house is to the recommended Saorview site, an indoor aerial should generally work at a window facing towards the site.

No harm in spending a few quid to see how an indoor aerial works if it saves you €50 to €100 in getting an aerial , but if you want to use Saorview in a few rooms, it begins to make more sense to get an aerial installed for the rooms. Also, indoor aerials are more sensitive to the signal breaking up if someone walks beside the aerial or if someone switches a light off beside it or if a fridge thermostat kicks in. Some cases will see it happen every time, other cases will have no garbled video/breakup ever noticed.

And you can get aerial kits with cable and all for less than €40 which you can DIY with and put up in the attic or outside on a wall or even on the same mount as the satellite dish.
