Not seeking a discussion about this specific case but it does raise questions as to how NCHD's are hired , unable to take a pulse ?

Is this a one off or could this be a ' tip of the iceberg ' situation ?

I just read the article and thought "how could someone qualify as a doctor and not know how to take a pulse" but then I realised how I'm constantly surprised by the number of people who are qualified in my profession (accountantcy) and don't know their debits and credits.

If you'd told me last week that you'd heard of a doctor that couldn't take a pulse, or couldn't tell how much oxygen someone was getting, I'd have questioned you. Then again, there's no original mistakes in medicine.

it should ve surprising at all. ireland does have excellent undergraduate medical training. doctors from east europe and far east stand out as being less clinically competent in my experience. with the recent shortages and impulsive recruitment and legislation, standards will plummet.

Yeah but when did a debit confused with a credit cost someones life ?

The irish system may be long and laborious but junior and senior graduates are very well thought of internationally

I often hear this said......within Ireland. What are you basing it on ? Have you been abroad and asked the locals ?

Take a look at the recruitment pages in the varoius Irish medical newspapers. They are full of advertisements from international recruitment companies/hospitals/health centres seeking Irish trained doctors for work in Australia NZ & Canada. They ought to be highly sought after if these papers are been bombarded with these ads.

Irish graduates are not necessarily well thought of internationally, but we are hard working speak english, and are willing to travel.

It seems this lady had come straight from college to an SHO job, without a whole lot of clinical experience in college (surprise surprise!).

Have I been a tad naive in assuming that all doctors irrespective of what country they trained in have done a period as an Intern ?
