Netbook Acer or Asus?

Looking for a basic netbook with reasonable battery life (6 cell) and lightweight for travelling. OS irrelevant as I will install Linux.

Have seen an Asus and an Acer with almost identical specs and price.

As manufacturers go are they similar as far as quality and reliability is concerned, is one better than the other or should I avoid both and go for a different manufacturer?

Any observations from owners would be appreciated.

I am currently buying a laptop too, my last one broke. A friend who is well up on them said to get an acer or asus, preferably an asus as they are better built but both are well built from what he has seen. I am currently in the process of buying an Asus

Asus netbooks seem to have a longer-lasting battery charge than the others, which is the main reason that I got one. Apart from that, they all seem to be the same.

Most of the horror stories I hear about reliability are Acer related. I have no info to help you beyond friends of mine whining about Acer, so I figured I'd just share that.

Yeah I don't like Acer at all, I don't have a huge amount of concrete evidence to support that, but a friend of mine had a Acer laptop and the screen keeps flickering which is a very common problem with their laptops apparently.

Asus on the otherhand are one of the most respected and highly rated pc equipment suppliers, so for me it's definitely go with Asus

My vote would definitely be with ASUS. Most of the bad things I've heard have been with Acer - and to a lesser extent - HP, and Toshiba laptops. ASUS on the other hand seem to be great. I actually only own a single part from them (TF101), but that's fantastic.
